Ambition...

Here's my question:

Is it better to strive for great acchievements, but not quite make it...

OR

To stick to simple things and do them well?

Obviously, I have playing Flamenco guitar in mind when asking this question, but the principles involved may be universal.

I'm also curious as to whether its wise to immitate or copy great people... on one hand you benefit through positive association. But on the other hand, you will always be living in their shadow.

Any thoughts?

Baby steps! I've been living the dream for over ten years and am just now getting started. Dream big, but don't get impatient.

Some people say Vicente Amigo sounds like PDL. Don't know if I agree, although his pieces are structured similar. In any case copying is like learning to talk for me. As a baby you copy what everyone says, eventually you can express yourself - but you have to make the effort at a certain point.

Ultimately, playing somehting simple really really well is always better than playing something difficult poorly. In the end, it all about getting the music across. But from a personal developement standpoint, I think a player should do both. Have solid repetoire that you can handle but also keep somethting you can't quite handle on the go as well.

I think starting small is a prerequisite, not an alternative, to aiming high.

Heres a saying I've heard and like, " if you play cover tunes your band will allways play cover tunes".

But this may not apply to Flamenco.

Some people develop a very good consistancy in there playing and some push the limits and make mistakes. Something I'm trying to develop(consistancy and logical playing).

I'ts allways other musicians that can push each other more than your friends do, your friends will allways say, "you were great", a musician will say well,,,,you could have done this....or this.....

Thats why forum members despite there level on guitar should not be chickin **** and upload how there doing and see how it feels to be ripped apart..hahahahahahahahaa

In non-professionals, many other commitments will slow your progress. Unless you've got the money and time to spend all your life on guitars, lessons and practice time.

For me, I prefer to aim moderately high. But learn from everyone of all levels, from the mediocre to the best. You can learn something from anyone of any level. Even the most beginner of guitarists may teach you something, as I've learnt from instructing beginners in classical guitar.

So be open to all sources but never get too satisfied with your present level. Always aim higher than where you're at!
