Cantaores...
As I go on listening to more and newer (to me) flamenco my tastes evolve. Funny though, I generally find myself collecting music by cantaores more than guitaristas.
The cantaores have actually turned me on to more palos than the guitar players. For example, alegrias never really turned my crank. Until I discovered Chano Lobato who's lilting whimsical voz raja actually made me see alegria in an alegria.
So my question for you people is which cantaores do you feel manage to be be the king of, or perfect singer for a specific palo?

There is a buleria on Tomatitos Paseo de los Castanos, Ahi te quedas, I think it's an incredible buleria, the only problem is I don't know who sings it! Does anyone know?
Also, I just bought Potitos new album and though it took a couple of listenings I have to say that I really, really like it, I listen to it constantly. Any thoughts on Potito?
On Tomatito's disc, it is Luis el Zambo and Fernando de la Morena, Zambo sings first.
Potito is sounding great now a days, listen to Tomatito's latest disc where Potito and Guadiana sing bulerias "en casa del Herrero", really inspiring singing. Ultimo Cantaor was great too, mainly he is a bulerias guy.
I like a lot of old style singers. Listen to the old creators of certain styles, Fandangos are especially personal. Nino de Gloria for example. Porrina & Farina.
Perla de Cadiz for Alegrias Caracol for Fandangos La Paquera for Bulerias and Fandangos Maria Vargas also for Bulerias and Fandangos Indio Gitano for Solea and Tangos. Aurora Vargas for Tangos and bulerias Luis el Zambo for bulerias and Solea por bulerias Terremoto Jr for Malaguena, solea por bulerias, and why not bulerias too. Miguel Poveda for Granaina and Cantinas/Alegrias Esperanza Fernandez for Siguiriyas Camaron for Taranta/Cartagenera/Minera etc.
As for more modern style singers, yeah I like Duquende and Potito mainly for bulerias, tangos, etc. Fast rhythmic stuff.
I feel like I am giving awards for cante competition or something. Just listen different singers, this is very much personal choice. The Movie "Flamenco" by Saura, tries to capture different artists doing their strongest material. Rito y Geografia del Cante is more in depth, but does the same.
I pretty much agree with the names mentioned so far, but I'd like to add Manuel Agujetas for Siguiriyas and Martinetes. My second favorite for Siguiriyas is Jose Merce.
I forgot to mention Paquera de Jerez..She was awsome..god bless her soul..I know you guys mentioned cantaores but she is extra special for those that love cante and gitanas.. Ivan
As I'm browsing the forums tonight I keep meaning to check what this thread was all about and then I noticed it was one of mine.
I will definitely check out the singers you mention, but as for looking at it from a regional perspective, having never travelled Spain I have no point of reference.
While it makes sense to think of it your way, I have to admit my ignorance as to the geography in regards to the music. I do try to read sites like Horizonte Flamenco (you linked in another thread and have referenced that site many times in the past myself), the problem is that the level of language used there is a little above my level of educacion. It's far too culto for me. I have to read it - learn all the new vocabulary - reread it. Worse yet, when it comes to music etc, many times I have to learn the vocabulary and concepts in both languages and then go back to reading and rereading it.
Perhaps we should have a section for essays etc to be posted and you could edumacate me.
It's not that speaking or reading Spanish has ever really been a problem. Spanish is slower reading as I have to learn vocabulary on-the-fly (contextually and etymologically), but doable. But learning new concepts in Spanish is taxing.
Barcelona: Actually, I think Carmen Amaya was from there, don't remember. Duquende, Poveda, and singers accompanied by Chicuelo often, like Mayte, Ginesa Ortega, etc. And you know Yi Yi is from there (he is with chuscales often). Can't say for sure what the "style" is but they all have something similiar, but still different than say jerezanos.
Nowadays it seems young people are doing things from any region, regardless where they are from.
Does anybod have anything with Borrico and Gerardo Nuñez?
I doubt it. Nunez would be like 15? And his playing probably nothing so special or different as the traditional jerez guys. Of couse his playing now is interesting, but I don't think Borrico gets much better than that great stuff with Paco Cepero.
He has one bulerias on the Zambo family disc(thanks Tom!), I think Diego Amaya plays.
