Triplet Rasgueados Question

Hey everyone,

I've been reviewing my various p-ma-p, p-a-i, etc triplet rasqueados lately and wondering what the concensus is on

'wrist only' vs 'wrist + downward finger strokes'

Currently, I kick out my 'ma' fingers, for instance, but notice that I don't use as much wrist as some (esp those who appear to have their hand locked in a fixed position). I find the sound I get is a little mushy especially at lower volumes. Thoughts?

Sean,
These kind of questions are really difficult to answer without posting a Video/Audio clip.

Probably doesn't matter what one uses if it works, but I prefer the p-m-p abanico, the wrist rotation gives me more control at lower volume. My 2 cents.

As long as you practice it stacatto, and slow, you'll probably find the best way naturally, if you ask me. I think a lot of positional issues are really wagging the tail. When you do it right, it looks right. You don't do it right by looking right. But I'm probably preaching to the choir here...

I found the Oscar Herrero DVD vol 2 extremely helpful on rasgueados. He shows a whole panoly of it and he does them beautifully.

For what it's worth, when I was taking lessons in Jerez I was taught to NOT flick my fingers out (which is what I was doing). Keep them stationary but not real stiff and move from the wrist.

It's all in the wrist! it should feel and look effortllessly. practice slowly until it becomes a natural movement. it is the only way. it takes years to get it just right.

I agree, you have to find what feels natural to you. Here lately I have been using P-c-i and P-a-i alot. AND, it may 'be all in the wrist' for some, but a mojority of my technique originates in the forearm.

Hm, why not flick out the fingers?

Thanks all. Perhaps I'll post a bit of video and see if there is something that jumps out as a 'going forward' recommendation. But keep up the tips ... I'll try them all.
