Flamenco and the "addictive&quo...

A few things have made me think about this... The recent one being that Edgar saying that he smokes tobacco. I know ToddK does too (sometimes enhanced ) Goddam, I've been trying to give up smoking for the last 10 years or so, with no success. I think this is a personality thing. (I mean, really..when it gets down to it... I don't really actually care if I die.. enough to make me give up.. ) Ricardo stated in a previous post that he reckons he has an "addictive" personality too, so that's why he stays away from stuff. On alcohol, I like a few pints...but if I'm having a good conversation with friends over the table and there's no work the next day, I'll happily get plastered! One thing seems to bind us all though... That is each of us tends to have a side which is very disciplinarian and very hard working and another that couldn't give a toss. Another trait tends to be folk who are mainly pacifists and abhor violence and have no interest in being conned by politicians etc...we seem to be able to switch to a different world and get out of it all.. This is something I don't really see in other folk who do humdrum jobs and live moderate lifestyles of getting higher in their careers and buying the right house and car and going out each weekend to buy more consumer stuff, while I've spent all that Sunday afternoon playing and listening to the same falseta and still totally pissed of with what I'm doing. It's a curious mix of Rebel/Strict Disciplinarean that you don't find in any other general walks of life. Another great example is Simon, who worked in a crazy pro Rock band, ended up working as a top engineer for Microsoft, then giving it all up, moving to a little village in Andalucia, but still remaining passionate and focussed... I think the same would go for Singers and Dancers to a certain extent. But I think guitarristas are a breed of their own, in my experience. Half crazy and half the most intelligent and disciplined folk I've met. Anybody else want to own up to their weaknesses? cheers Ron

I really think I'm at the stage where I could let it all go and just live in a single roomed , whitewashed bloody hut with a bed and a table and chair and some facilities for cooking and I'd be pefectly happy, so long as I had my guitar and record collection! What about a broadband connection?

And what do I find when I get here? Dr. Robert, guitarist of "The Blow Monkeys" and Yoof, bassist in "Killing Joke", got here before me. Kate's partner (up the road in Granada) was "10 Years After"'s sound engineer and played with Jim Capote. It is a quest Ron, with many forks in the road but there are no right or wrong turns. I quite fancy making quality porn movies for example And, yes. I am a very addictive personality - smoke, drink and love.

My uncle Egon is a certified alcoholic. He's been in and out of rehab (at the taxpayer's expense, might I add!). He often swears he'll never drink again, but always does. its a real shame because he was a successful carpenter, with a family, car, a house, etc. And now its all gone due to alcohol. his wife left him, his daughter (my cousin) lives with his (ex) wife, the car and house got repossessed, and he lost his job. For a while, he was even sleeping rough on a park bench. Occasionally we get a phonecall asking to borrow some more money (only this time he'll pay it back! ). To be honest, the guy is lucky to still be alive. But its remarkable how little sympathy he gets from my family. We occasionally lend him a bit of money (which undoubtedly goes on alcohol), and thats about it. I guess if you want to overcome an addiction, you have to really want it for yourself, and other people can only do so much. I think the addictive gene runs in my family. My main addiction music. I only wish PRACTISING my various instuments was the addiction, that way I might actually be good one of them by now. for me, its LISTENING to music. Which seems quite selfish, now that I think about it because its like I'm "using" the artists for personal gratification. I mentioned in one of my posts that I found the "duende" feeling addictive, and this is true. Although I can apply variations of duende to other genres of music, and get a similar feeling. In a way, music could be considered very similar to drugs: they give you pleasure, can be costly with your money and time. And sometimes they become an obsession that your life becomes based around. Well, I guess its better to be addicted to Flamenco and music than alcohol or crack cocaine! Its less anti-social, at least! Jb
