Jesus de Rosario

Recently, I have been so into Jesus de Rosario's style. His magical tone and the way using chords made me crazy. But why are there only a few videos on YouTube? And I noticed that he only had two albums.

Yes, well, he was part of the "nueva escuela" promoted by Gerardo Nuñez, the younger generation of hard working accompanists that were not having much outlet to display solo creativity. The majority of legit flamenco players are in this camp as this is part of the culture. Anyway I think Nuñez produced his albums (at least one for sure). Antonio Rey admitted that Gerardo pushed him and he knew he did not really have material, he was playing traditional "paco" and such that is not appropriate to record.

Rey's first album sounds forced and then he got it together on his next efforts and become a proper "solista". Some of these other guys the opposite, and I feel Jesus was of the best. He had a limited amount of strong material and used it for those historic recordings. That is it. I am glad he does not try to force a new record again and again of the same type of thing (as Vicente Amigo has done). Flamenco is not that type of music of open creativity...once you find your voice, you present all the palos with your personal style and you are done, then you keep working as the accompanist. Being a solo player like Paco de Lucia is an unusual thing in the genre and he was a unique case of reinventing himself one album after the other and doing tours where he could keep material fresh or keep it evolving. Other players like Sabicas said everything he needed to on his early albums and kept concertizing the same material. Why record that over and over?

There are more than a few videos on youtube of him accompanying.
Because he's more than a soloista, he only made solo recordings when he had something to record. Like other Caño Roto players e.g. Ramón Jiménez with Sembrando inquietudes, or El Viejín with Algo Que Decir.

You can find Jesus de Rosario accompanying on Antonio El Turry's 2021 album Borracho de arte.

Some solo

You can see/listen to some of his frustration in this interview.

The way things work nowadays (views, exposure, financial success, fans, etc.) affect almost everything including flamenco. So much so that actual skill in the art might become secondary and the skill how to present it and market it and make a living off it becomes the primary skill.
And that is what he is understandably frustrated about. It really sucks but then again, since one can't change it, might as well learn more about it and use it to get more attention and exposure. Unfortunately it seems like there is no other way.
Even politics these days is more about how much you tweet than how much knowledge and skills you actually have.

A passive approach with focus just on the art won't get you far these days.

Add to that that Jesus seems to be pretty introverted makes it even more difficult.
He is one of my top favorite players as wells.
