Accents and dynamics

At 7:45-10:30 he talks about accents and dynamics in flamenco. You can activate english subtitles if needed.

Downstroke and upstroke, chord changes, golpe create accents.
We don't need to play accented beats louder.
Dynamics are flat in Bulerias. In general flamenco palos are free of dynamics.

Do you guys agree with what he said?

RE: Accents and dynamics (in reply to devilhand

I agree with what HE describes, but not what you are saying. Dynamics are not related to palos but to TOCAORES. Some players seem to have a flat dynamic at times, such as Moraito bulerias, vs Melchor or Cepero. Audio compression plays a role that disappears in live settings. My experience in Spain with Nuñez was that the studio recordings in the 90s often robbed the dynamics from his music. Same with a lot of digitization of old flamenco. The original vinyl records reveal wide dynamic ranges of both singing and playing flamenco.

One thing to say about bulerías, for example the playing of Tino examples you point to. The CONTRA TIEMPOS, which are done as upstrokes, are essentially “flat” or at one dynamic, and the “accents” are the chosen ones based on some pattern that is subject to change. But that is only ONE type of expression we can use in Bulerías….again….listen to Cepero or Melchor.
