The thing that gets missed when people talk about Al’s big ego was back in that time he was the most accessible of the three to larger audiences. When I saw him playing with Chick Corea he was about 19 years old, and was a fully formed, highly listenable, mature sounding musician with his own distinctive style. He was a monster player, so having some ego shouldn’t be surprising.
I didn’t know about the tinnitus stuff, but learning to cope with that condition can be a MF at any age. He could have been concerned his career was in jeopardy. So, ragging on someone for suffering a disability like that isn’t cool, it’s no wonder he got upset and blew up.
