Well, Gerardo could have done only a solo concert. Unlike everybody else he wants to promote others. He has been doing this since “Nueva Escuela” production, where the poor tocaores in Spain that had been working their ASSES off for years and years only playing for cante and/or baile, could have a chance to feature their creative ideas. I for one was not impressed by most of the compositions, having known the players to already be great accompanists. Antonio Rey later had a great album of solo material, and Diego del Morao was ok too. Antonio said Gerardo had “forced him” to make his debut album, where he did not even have any good compositions (by his own opinion). It could be the case with some others (Gerardo pushing guys that are otherwise just fine being accompanists), but Rey has long since become a soloists anyway so in his case it was a good kick in the butt.
We can have a debate whether what Gerardo is doing (promoting solo flamenco guitar composition) is good or bad. In the end the aficionados of flamenco guitar solo remain a small group.

Was Gerardo the driving force behind Diego del Morao's album (as he was with Antonio), or did Gerardo just help with it?

Gerardo produced an album with multiple guitarists (nueva escuela), Antonio Rey and Jesus del Rosario first albums, and Jesus Mendez. Diego was featured on Nueva Escuela but never put out a full album until many years later. I believe that album was produced by Cigala who he was working with at the time. I don’t think Gerardo was involved at all. My main point earlier is that those guys might never have been involved with solo projects if Gerardo had never promoted them as soloists in the first place. Many players are perfectly happy to only accompany, and if you can’t tell already, they are made to feel that way by others in general (oh, you want to indulge yourself with solos…who do you think you are, Sabicas??). The term “solista” in flamenco circles is derogatory. The first ever solo flamenco recording by Ramon Montoya was the product of MUCH pushing by his friend Zayas, and worse, had to be recorded in France cuz Spaniards don’t care
