Juan Habichuela nieto... and his spe...

The entire video is pretty good but, just for now, skip to minute 7:40...

The first time I saw this video I was only listening and I thought he was doing a picado, but today I saw it again and, for my surprise, I noticed he was using his thumb. I was just blown away by this lightning speed pulgar of his.

It seems to me he is doing some kind of a very fast alzapua in one string. Maybe with a mix of ligados also.

Any ideas or comments on this?
Besides WOW...

He is using his thumb and thumbnail like electric guitar players use a pick.

John (pgh) is correct. Juan showed me one night up close what he is doing. Its not Alzapua, its simply up, down, up, down with the thumbnail exactly like a guitar pick. Gerardo does the same thing but tends to use the technique to make tremelo lines whereas Juan can do crazy scales at the same time. (no ligado)

Makes sense. I had never seen such thing done with a thumb.

When you say Juan can do crazy scales using his thumbnail like a guitar pick, do you mean up and down across all the strings? Or just on the first string, like he is doing in this video, I guess? I can't really tell if he his playing the first string only or both the first and second strings...

I've seen him do both. He showed me an Alzapua line on two strings that is pretty cool.

Here is a short video of him noodling around. It looks like his fathers place "la Buleria"
Is that a young "pirata" next to him? Hes doing the thumb technique around at 0.11. Anyway he can do one string, 2 strings , 3 strings...his thumb work is really crazy.
