Two of the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen were Gordon’s programmes for the Beeb that were broadcast in 1972. For decades all I had was a CD I cut from a reel-to-reel recording I made at the time; but 50 years after the original, the Beeb re-broadcast them, and I was able to buy a high fidelity DVD from someone who had captured them.

They are now, fortunately, both on YouTube.

P.S. For my money, some of the performances here are superior to the ones on record: for instance, Early Morning Rain and Affair on 8th Avenue.

Gordon Lightfoot was one of the greats. I have two of his vinyl LP albums I bought back in 1977 at Clark Air Base in the Philippines when I was assigned to the American Embassy in Manila. One of the albums is a double with his hits up to that time: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, For Loving Me, Early Morning Rain, Canadian Railroad Trilogy, and the list goes on. I just retrieved the album from my stack and plan to play it this evening when I have my copita of jerez, and I will drink a silent toast in tribute to Gordon Lightfoot.
