CG forum goes nuts

Hey guys, I know a couple of you lurk in the classical guitar forum (heads up mIchael, Andy ;-)... have you checked it out last few days?

Some guy called Aryeh has gone beserk - all that flaming, posting in caps.

Phew. Might give it a miss for a while while things calm down.

Yes, and very well too.

He's uploaded a couple of things, notably a Torroba piece which sounded great.

Not bad, I think he would struggle playing anything more contrapuntle with a pick though. Bach , no chance.

If you have an acount why not log in and "Save As Cookie" then you won't have to post as Guest in the Public Forum.

Delete Cookies in IE Internet Options first, to reset your session info. and you should be fine.

I wanted to listen to Todd's clip, mostly because Ron has been so positive about his playing, I decided I'd give it a second chance. And, to be honest, I had to adjust my thinking a bit. He plays really well. The piece exhibits quite a bit of control and musicality. There's something too "celestial" about his production if you get my drift, but his playing of the guitar is excellent. The further along I get, the harder that kind of really clean playing and execution seems to me! His playing with a pick seems immaterial with this particular piece. It's funny, but picado and alzapua are the only techniques I know of that are easier with a pick. Someone at a high level of development should know that within 2-5 years, those can be developed. He has obviously figured out a lot of other techniques and that would make learning those two easier. That being said, I believe that picado is the hardest flamenco technique. I tear my hair out dealing with the damn thing! If Todd has a repertoire full of this level of piece, I don't see why he isn't out there making a name for himself. He's definitely reached the point where it's not about practicing, it's about business and making music. My feeling is, "fly away, birdie! You dont' have to sit on the nest here and sit on us chickies! Fly, be free, soar if you like!"

Hi Mike,
Good to see you are listening to the playing rather than the "internet personality".
I liked Todd's stuff from the first thing he ever posted.
As well as having worked very hard to achieve his technique, he has this outstanding sense of timing.
Really extraordinarily good.
And you can't get that from careful "editing".
Also his care of dynamics.
Todd, frankly, is one of the best guitarists I have ever heard.
Yet, he is anything but the ogre and overbearing guy that you sometimes see on the Internet.
He is not a mild or shy guy, but has his share of self doubt and his own insecurities like anyone else.
From the conversations I've had with him by email and the various clips of other players he wanted me to hear, I can assure you that his taste in Flamenco is not just limited to PdL and Tomatito, but to many "unknowns".
And always tending to the "traditional" style.
Todd's a "good egg".
Believe me!

Yeh, his phrasing and timing are impeccable, and he must spend virtually all day practicing to get to that standard A few years ago, I used to spend 7 hours a day plus practicing, and got fairly good, but in my immediate surroundings, north of England, never had any role models of guitarists who were making a living at the Guitar, either teaching or playing, I think in today's age, unless you have won the lottery, it is difficult to justify practicing all day and night, when there is bread needed on the table. Iam learning at the mo a Bach Partita No 6 suite (Hubert Kappel), and Its dawned on me half way through, that for anyone to play it smoothly, It would take 7 hours plus a day practice, no matter who you are.

I've never played a piece like that partita, and I've never practiced 7 hours a day consistently, but I did have a friend who played virtuoso pieces. For example, he played the Concierto de Aranjuez (with a piano accompaniast). He said that you had to practice a lot to get it up, then you could take a break, but you would have to practice really hard again for several weeks to get it up to speed again. But he said 5. 5 hours a day.

4, 5 7 hours, Iam not spliting hairs, I'd say 5 hours minmum for months and months, to know the Orange Juice concerto confidently enouge to play it in public.

Actually, i could, and do play Bach.
But i am not interested in pursuing classical playing to that extreme.
I love the spanish composers. Not a big fan of Bach. But i respect his incredible
accomplishments and monsterous musicianship.

I hope im not pissing Simon off by posting here.

The Gige to the Bach peice BWV 830 is incredibley just thumb, and first finger all the way through, very flamenco technique.

You're right Billy, i would have a heck of a time with some of the more
visious Bach stuff. Actually, i can and do play counterpuntally(hope i didnt wreck
that spelling too badly). I use M and A fingers, like most use I and M.
M and A work well, with the pick doing the bass. They are more even in length
than I and M.
I'm constantly going back and forth from alternate picking to M and A, to both
at the same time.
And i'm sweeping the pick alot. Alot of control is required, but it makes
for really smooth arpegios. The trick is the transitions. Linking everything together
seemlessly. Its fun though.
