Sync with the metronome

I'm having a problem with the metronome and was wondering if anyone else encountered the same difficulty:

I always practice wit the metronome. I have to say I'm mostly in time, but I'm actually not, Because I unconsciously synched my playing to hear the metronome. That means I hear the clicks. So I'm slightly behind the clicks. Regular, but behind.

I'm trying now to be spot on so I don't hear the click anymore, but I'm so used to hear the click that it's really hard to change that habit.

Anyone encountered that problem ?

The metronome I was using had a light. When I got to the point that I wasn’t hearing the click I still had the light as a reference. It was an odd experience at first, but I got used to it.

As Mr. Wooten said you have to wean yourself off the metronome.

I wrote it in another topic. I hope this will help you.

8th and 16th notes (bpm=80-90 in 4/4 time)
Set the metronome click on off-beats of the 8th notes (&'s), triplets (the 3rd beat) and 16th notes (e's and a's). Again, you must feel the missing beats on your own.

You can tap your foot on the 1st downbeat or on 1 and 3 or on 2 and 4 or on every beat if you want to.

You could try turning the volume up, or get a louder metronome. Or go play for a dance class!

But you are in time if you are in a constant offset from the actual clicks - i.e. you are keeping time at the exact tempo of the metronome. I understand you want to eliminate the constant offset, but wanted to point out that you are not failing at keeping time, which is what the primary goal of using a metronome is.

I will try these various tricks.

Kitarist, yes, that's exactly it. Yesterday and today I practiced and focused on not hearing the metronome. It's still odd but I'm getting used to it. As i was in time, it's just a habit to change. it seems to function.

I was gonna say, but maybe you figured it out already, make the click DISAPPEAR…that is when you are right on it. But the honest way to get it is to record yourself playing to the metronome. That objective point of view fixes tons of problems.

Later on as you get more advanced you will notice this issue called “micro timing” where, overall, you can influence the feeling of the music by playing more on top or a bit behind the beat deliberately. Obviously on top makes the music a bit more exciting and laying back is more relaxed, lazy, or romantic or something. It is subjective in terms of the feeling but the math is an objective reality and you end up with physical control of it.
