Practicing picado without a guitar?

Does anyone have any suggestions on practicing picado without a guitar? Often volume is an issue so I can't just pick up my guitar and practice. I'm wondering is there another way to make progress with picado when you don't have access to a guitar?

You can use a small practice tool. I have two of these which I use occasionally. One is with frets and one without. The one with frets can be used to play fretted picado using the left hand but it is somewhat awkward and I normally just use it for one hand at a time.

It found it a very effective way to improve picado.

Mostly I practice on a Yamaha travel guitar. It has an electronic audio output which I've never used as the natural sound is good enough to hear what you are playing and not loud enough to disturb the neighbours. The guitar is convenient and robust enough so that you can play while watching TV, surfing the net etc.

If its all just about the volume not to disturb others at night or whatever, without using any other tool, and for better feel and practice result, I guess you could put a piece of soft cloth or something like that close to the bridge below the strings and put another bigger soft clothing inside the soundhole. These would dampen the sound for sure.
Just be careful not to do any scratches on the guitar.

Do not practice technique without a guitar. Otherwise you'll end up with corrupt right hand. The foro member Erik van Goch mentioned the concept of corrupt hand. Maybe he'll show up and explain it more in detail.

IMO, practicing and developing technique means developing fine motor skills. This is possible only on a guitar or on a tool which is an exact copy of your guitar.
