What is entering the public domain a... 
For the first time ever (for the US), some sound recordings will enter the public domain - around 400,000 of them - anything recorded before 1923. As for other works, anything created in 1926. Some notables are Winnie-the-Pooh; 'The Sun Also Rises'; Dorothy Parker's first poetry book.

For flamenco it is tricky as many things get re issued and therefore protected again starting at later dates. As I have searched for copyright on various works I often come across things where my eyebrows raise. For example, works I know where previously protected in certain collections where I doubt proper permissions where obtained. Imo it is messy.

As I understand it, if it is a sound recording made before 1923, it is now in the public domain according to US law. If the same recording is just reissued after 1923, that would not change the starting date (while there have been different rules through the versions of the US law, the current one counts from year of creation). If it is re-mixed etc. (but that is not a thing for 1920s) it might have a case for being somehow sufficiently modified.

Also confusing is that some of these (not just about flamenco) may have been public domain already in other countries, like in Canada, because of differences in copyright law.

BTW this is now supposed to be an annual thing, so next Jan 1 we get the 1923 sound recordings, and so on eventually we get to the 1930s and pretty good sound quality.

When do these masters and publishung rights enter the public domain?
Will they ever be in the public domain one day?

My copy of Sonifolk 20139 "Ramon Montoya el Genio de la Guitarra Flamenca" is marked as copyrighted 1999. The recordings originated from 1923 to 1936. Sonifolk has a Spanish address.

Credit is given to Andrew Walker for "Transferencia de los discos gramofónicos y limpieza digital." He certainly deserves it. I would say that the processing is more than a "digital cleaning." It's an acoustic reconstruction, compensating for flaws in the recording equipment and studio acoustics.

I suspect that when the 1936 recording date indicates public domain, Sonifolk will still claim they are entitled to compensation for the great audible improvements.

Less likely to succeed in claiming copyright would be a notorious Sabicas CD I have. There are two examples of each piece. The liner notes brag about finding "alternate takes" on two different tapes. It is perfectly obvious that the CD transfer is from one tape, plus a second tape that is a less defined, noisier copy of exactly the same recordings.

(I think 1990s remixes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones that I have heard on Youtube are worse than the originals. The instruments may sound better defined, but the levels of different instruments are wrong in the remix.)
