RE: Picado on Electric Guitar (in reply to Pgh_flamenco

It is not easy to improvise in the manner he does, until you get the devices under the fingers like little falsetas. However, that is a different discipline. Wes Montgomery and Benson used to do similar lines with nail-less thumb strokes. Neither should we call that “pulgar” than Matteo is doing “picado”. It only looks like picado, but he is doing the typical jazz phrasing with fingers, that is all. If I played picado on electric I would not play over the neck pickup like that, first of all, and second, the type of lines I would do over the progressions would be very different. He has a nice swing which takes a long time to develop as well, I have never heard a picado done with that type of swing. If you compare to Django style picking, the gypsies do apoyando down strokes and tirando up strokes with the pick, which is a huge part of the sound and resultant swing feel. Since we have not seen this done with fingers like that, sure, Mateo is unique.

Is picado really so important?

Look, the fast runs are always a goal for top level artists. I just want to get my fingers going as fast as Aurelio’s scale at 2:38 here during Paquiri style Soleá when he says “cirujano”.... it is indeed like surgery to get a good clear picado run like that:

Beautifully played, but too many falsetas from Montoya.
I can hear what Pericón meant in A Thousand and One Stories when he said "...practically the entire record was stolen by Montoya, who only occasionally let Aurelio come in."

I think he's a great player but it has almost nothing to do with picado. It doesn't sound the same, and it isn't done the same way. As far as comparing him to PdL, I don't agree. He's really young but he hasn't written anything that has broken out. Maybe he will, who knows. When he starts writing tunes that become standards, like all the jazz greats, then maybe. Highly unlikely IMO.

Paco changed flamenco. Matteo is great but he hasn't changed jazz in any way, except maybe convinced a few guys to try to play sans pick.

I'll admit that I don't know his entire output, and really, I don't care much about electric guitar improvising, or improvising single lines, period. I've heard it, and heard it, and heard it.

I see really good electric players all the time online, playing way better than I ever did on electric. But heck, in my day, you went out and gigged. That requires having good gear, and knowing it, and a bunch of other skills that you don't need to make a 30 second youtube clip of a solo in a cover tune.
Playing in your bedroom just isn't the same.

I realize Matteo is special, and far from an internet bedroom guy. He's great. I just really don't care. I still admire jazz improv, and practice it sometimes because of the application of different scales and devices.

Flamenco is my jam these days.

It's still a huge challenge for me to play something simple in a way that sounds authentic. Konstantin ripped a file for me and I learned the guitar part pretty quickly but getting it to sound good is another story. That is way more interesting than doing something I did fairly well 40 years ago.

Here is the tune-simple, but not so simple to sound like this player:

theres a lot of guys (and girls ) ripping and shredding the guitar , like Mateus Asato for example... many on electric . The youngster of Phobia for example.. well the other one is also great.

Phobia its one of the nice , diferent , original projects like "animals as leaders" where 15 (?) years ago or more , and Tosin Abasi was (is) a tecnical monster that made some trends

sorry my mistake , its that band , not phobia....lol
dont hear them for several months , like As i lay dying or killswitch engage (both with great guitars)
Its Polyphia that i was talkin about , with two great guitars , Tim and the other, but tim is great.
That guy its not from Polyphia

Tim and Polyphia are the trend , even Steve Vai admires him/them and gets Wow when see him playing, he admit that kids are comming better and better , doing things that he thinks "WTF?!" and pushes him to continue and go further .
For me who opens and made this trend was Tosin.. from Animals as Leaders , will put it on last video , Tosin also started the trend (more serious) for Baritone guitars

Tosin Back then

I am always impressed a little by new ideas and young people introducing new sounds. But I dont’ understand the big deal about them as players, like they have surpassed the older generation etc. Most of the guys are impressing with weird rhythms and complex lines, rather than very hard driving melodic theme. Like this alternate picking thing of Gilbert sounds simple musically but very hard to do, and much more memorable melodically than those young guys. Not yet surpassed IMO.

Nuno and Gilbert joining forces to interpret Racer-X and Extreme tunes was an historic moment for me:
