Not too fond of flametal, but that's a personal taste. They are a class act though.

I did see Benjamin Woods their lead guitarist and Fanny Ara-Hermes one of their dances in a traditional flamenco show and they are both great. I liked Benjamin's playing and Fanny is just an amazing dancer.

In fact at that same show Jason McGuire played too, and I found Ben's playing to be supperior.

IMO there is nothing wrong with this. It doesn't "pretend" to 100% Flamenco, nor 100% metal, but borrows from both. It encourages Metal fans to take an interest in Flamenco and vice versa.

I'm not yet qualified to state whether the buleria were in correct compas as the band claims. But if so, thats another positive thing... a bit of authenticity that some others might lack. If Manitas de Plata didn't play in compas, then maybe Flametal are much closer to real flamenco than he is. I noticed PDL had an electric bass guitar in his line up at the London show, so who's to say that an electric lead guitar isn't suitable either?

I'm not sure I'm keen on the vocals though... they're very "shouty" and reminiscent of some of those "Death Metal" bands. I like metal okay, but I'm not really into death metal. Its too heavy and agressive for its own good. "Thrash" is a bit better, and some of the thrash singers can hold a decent note aswell as shouting.

But thanks for bringing the band to my attention... I'll check the album out.

I just want say that Ben can play for real! I plan on going up to SF to see him play one of these days. He has posted on his website a siguiriyas which is very mature for his age. Plus he F...ing rocks. Err so to speak.

Me too. But this is actually not such a rare thing. I know of quite a few metalheads who are happy to listen to (or play) a bit of Flamenco from time to time.

I think the rare thing is vise versa: a Flamenco that appreciates metal.
