Has anyone used Square financial ser...

I am planning to buy a guitar on Craigslist to replace the stolen one. The seller wants to use Square to handle payment. Since I have always used PayPal for all my transactions, I don’t want to use something new, especially when I don’t know much about it. Does Square offer the same protection as you would have with PayPal? What if the merchandise does not arrive? Has anyone used Square? How does it work? Does the seller have to send me an invoice? Do I have to set up an account with Square? Many thanks in advance.

I would check their website for your questions about protection etc. That being said I have used square from merchants as it's a way for them to invoice via email and take credit payments electronically or even swipe a credit card from a phone or mobile device. Again though those were small transactions and not a full bore guitar. I would be very hesitant to buy a guitar from anyone on craigslist without some sort of protection like paypal provides if something doesn't show up.

Sorry for the late reply,

As I work in the credit card processing industry as a compliance officer I can offer you some advice.

1. if you are using a credit card through square which I am assuming you might me. You are still offered all of the protections that visa and MasterCard provide. That would be -
a. chargeback dispute rights - IE you have the right to dispute transactions if:
- the items is defective - not as described
As such, your dispute rights are 180 days from the date of the transaction if something happens to the guitar. Alas, let me know if I can help as we all kind of know each other in my industry - i think you will be fine

Kindest regards
Mike

Thank you all for your comments. I requested the seller to use PayPal and he agreed. The guitar was shipped and received promptly.
