Is there any way that we could add a "Letras/Lyrics" section to the forum?
I was thinking that there may be some flamenco players out there that would like to know the words to certain songs (maybe even translated into English). It is often difficult to pick out the lyrics by listening to a CD not only becuase some of the singer's accents, but also because some of the words are in Caló (Gipsy language) and it is hard to understand.
Is there anybody else that thinks this is a good idea? If so, how do we proceed?

Ron M.
Thanks for posting that site. It looks like it will be very useful. I'm going to save that one to my favorites.
What about posting the lyrics for some flamenco standards such as Fandangos or Colombianas?
I will post the standard lyrics for Zorongo tonight when I get home. I believe the lyrics for this flamenco standard came from a poem authored by Federíco García Lorca.
Miguel - LMAO. I have to agree with you. I think "Ay ay ay ay ayyyaaaayy" is in almost every song. Can you translate that into English for us?

Zorongo

My loving hands embroider you a cape With a garland of wallflowers and bangles of water ( Note: esclavinos is 18th century and connected with slavery) the moon is a small well the flowers count for nothing What counts are your arms At night when they embrace me What counts are your arms At night when they embrace me When you were my girl In the white spring the hooves of your horse ( note : cascos can also mean flirtatious) Four sobs of silver the moon is a small well etc...

hi. Another idea is to google parts of letras between "". I usely do that to find the whole one, like for instance: google "los van a prender" and you'll find the whole letra por tangos...
I actually think a letra-sección would be fine. There is a lot for guitarist here, but there are other facets of flamenco too. I can also try, with my poor english, to translate them for you if you have any, you need explained.

Kate: Very nice translation. I especially liked your side notes. Thank you. You seem very knowledgeable and valuable to this forum. Are you a native from Spain?
La Contratiempo: Thank you for the support on this idea. I hope others will see value in it too. We will see how it goes.

No I'm native English but live in Granada and I love translation, especially poetry, wish I could make a living doing this but no such luck. Most translation is legal, medical, engineering etc. My husband is a musician and record producer so which got us very involved with flamenco, another passion of mine.
Right I'm off to meet Simon our founder for lunch.

I would appreciate it. Regarding to letras there´s a new German site I´ve linked to in a separate thread. A Letras forum imho is a very useful completion to this flamenco stage.

If I wanna know some good poems. I would read a book of a good poet but I wouldnt hear flamenco singing.
I wouldnt call flamenco letras poems. Most of the letras are really bad amateur ones IMO.
And they all sing the same old letras (except more modern singers)... Only one farruca letra and all singers sing it. I thought the letras are the outlet of the singers feelings. Why do they all sing the same letras??? Arlegrias the same, other palos, too..etc.. Do they all have the same feelings? The same pain? IMO thats a bad fake if a singer sings the letras of another one. Or just what they call "traditional". I´m happy that many of the singers of today have teir own letras. But I chancel the level of poetry out here.

I think its a very good idea! Would be nice to have a collection of common letras w translations and different chord progressions they could be ackompanied with.

instead of only a letras section, is there way to do a database?? It's nice to hear specific letras done by the same singer at different points in their career or different singers. A good way to study.
The idea of the audio database is good, but it infringes the copyrights of the authors or their administrators. Buying CDs helps the interpreters more than just copying. So my suggestion would be to make different sections for palos and CD recomandations for cante, maybe devided into traditional and modern cante.

You´ve said you wanted to hear singers. Even if the singer uses public domain letras, publicating his interpretation infringes his copyright for sure, at least due to German laws what is prosecuted here. If in your country it is no problem, then let´s go for it.

There is "fair use" clause where if the excerpt is short enough, can be used for educational purposes. Any copyrighted work in USA. A single letra would be perfect example. Probably similar in other countries, but one would need to check it out.
