Paracho: Updated US State Departmen...
For anyone contemplating a trip to Paracho to purchase a guitar, be aware that the US State Department has issued an updated travel warning for Mexico as a result of the recent discovery of eight bodies near the resort area of Cancun.
The paragraph that applies to Paracho specifically lists the state of Michoacan (where Paracho is located) as well as the states of Colima, Guerrero, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas as being under a "level 4" advisory, which means US citizens should not travel to these areas for reasons of safety and security. The State Department cited “violent crime, such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery,” in the warning, calling these activities “widespread.”
Having spent a career in the US Diplomatic Service and State Department, I have been involved in the formulation and drafting of such warnings, and I can attest to the fact that they are not issued lightly. The State Department and other US Government agencies are involved and an interagency consensus on the warning is reached.
I understand that some may have traveled to Paracho without incident. If so, they may consider themselves fortunate. In my opinion it's not worth the risk. You can always order a guitar and have it shipped.
