The finger unfortunately did not straighten out. When flexed, the third finger crosses over to the other side of the pinky.
I will continue to teach, but my playing/gigging days are over. I am now figuring out what i'm going to do for income, cause i cant live on teaching alone. Thinking of getting into web based work. Anyway, good luck to everybody here, and take care of those hands! They can be taken away from you when you least expect it.

Jose has the same problem, he can't make a fist cuz ring finger crosses pinky and won't close all the way in....he can't even make the rockin devil horns sign...but he has adapted to playing with it, a lot of new chord voicings etc. Of course he was not the lead guitar but at least he works.
Here this is jose playing with me a few months after the accident. If you notice his left hand ring finger curves a bit toward the pinky so he used capo to play in A (3rd fret) instead of C as it was uncomfortable. He plays A major 9 cuz he can't play a normal A chord (X02100), but he has a comfy reach for normal barre chords as the ring finger curves away toward the pinky. So keep positive dude!

Hey Todd, that seems a bit soon to me for such a far reaching decision. Do you have access to professional rehab? In any case, as Ricardo says: "keep positive". I wish you all the best.

Sorry to hear that. No chance of improvement through some longer term physical therapy? If not, after discovering that old pick technique of yours, I figure that if somebody could figure out a way to go all Django on us and do more music with less fingers, it'd be you. Best of luck to you.

Finally after three years my nail fungus is cured for the present. I've been taking a pill once a week for it.
But in my quest to improve my picado I pushed it too hard one night a couple of months ago and strained all kinds of tendons. It caused a sharp pain in my elbow when I straightened my arm. The doc gave me a band that wraps tightly around my forearm which is supposed to help. Not playing guitar has also helped and it seems to be getting slowly better. Also a bunch of hand stretching exercises. As we get older injuries can really have a detrimental effect on the playing......
Todd, so sorry to hear this, I hope your injury heals to the point where you can resume playing at the high level you have always demonstrated.
A concert violin player I know well at one point seemed to lose his enthusiasm for playing and expressed to me that he was thinking about moving on. I said "What are you going to do? You've been playing for the last 40 years." He said that didn't mean he had to play for the next 40. Gave me some food for thought. There are a lot of wonderful things in the world that have nothing to do with playing music.
I've been doing less flamenco and more sport recently. Was really enjoying it until I knackered a ligament in my knee last week. Looks like it's gonna be less sport and more flamenco for a while.

I am no doctor but maybe there is still a surgeon who can help you with that, I would try to contact the best hand surgeon.

Damn Todd. Take some time away and adjust but don't hock all your guitars yet.
In 2010 I became partially paralyzed from the neck down from an extremely rare tumor in my spinal cord. It took me about 2 years to be able to pick up the guitar again. fingers in my left hand felt like they were broken by a hammer blow, and I never imagined I'd play again. I've had to resort to working from home and the guitar is a good distraction during the day.

I agree with everything Shroomy posted. I would also like to add that you had a great tangos improv thing i really enjoyed. Not to mention your Alegrias.

Indeed a loss to music. You we're inspiring to me early on as someone who transitioned from pic playing to fingers when it felt impossible. Even now your pic/finger hybrid video is more impressive to me now than the first time I saw it. Now that I understand the talent that went into it. Only you now what's best for you though, I would think it'd be nice to hold on to a couple guitars in case the urge hits you again. Music and the forum will miss you.

Jeez Jason I'm sorry to hear that and hope things keep heading in the right direction for you....
