New flamenco Palos never heard or se...

I suggest a big refresh and burst of imagination in flamenco music with new Palos created to enrich this already fabulous music (both rythmical and free style).

Let's have a go:

If there are Sevillanas, Granaínas, Cartageneras, Murcianas y Malagueñas, why not a Cordobesa, a Jerezana or a Gaditana?

In free style Palos alongside the Nana, Guajira, Colombiana and the likes why not a Romería (sort of spiritual palo in honour of the Holy Virgin or a local saint), a Chuchería (a sweet piece of music intended to seduce women) or a Deva (not Deba) a piece of music inspirated by Mother Nature?

That may sound ridiculous but wasn't it so to introduce a sort of South American tamtam in flamenco that finally became the cajón or even congas (which appeared in Cuba but originally came from Africa) as seen in 'Entre dos Aguas ' in 1976?

Let's play it as a game...

Y Last I heard was that an underground flamenco cult movement in LA was developing a new palo called the brutalanus. This is not for the faint hearted! To achieve the correct level of duende considered elemental for obtaining the much sought after 'puro' label from the cult's elite, the performer must consume near toxic levels of diabolically hot chilli peppers one to two hours before the performance. The style has an explosive character, and is interspersed with terrible screams of real pain. These characteristics make it repugnant to all but the most die-hard aficionados. Indeed, police have issued safety warnings following rumours that several payo amateurs have died and gone to hell trying to learn the ins and outs of the brutalanus. Several eminent aficionados of traditional flamenco, as well as a number of innocent bystanders, have declared the brutalanus as nothing short of 'pure sh*t'.

More palos are extinct than you could probably invent. For example your suggestions above already exist as Cordoba=Alegria de Cordoba and fandango de lucena etc, regional styles....Not a lot because it's well known no SINGERS of note come from that region. Jerezana you have all the styles of siguiriyas solea and buleria, the back bone of flamenco comes from that region already, and again associated with specific singers. Gaditana the same, Cantiñas and all the Mellizo cantes.

What I find more realistic and interesting would be to expand and create on existing forms such as fandangos or solea. Lots of room there. Cante de levante more could be done there.

In terms of rhythm, odd meter has been explored only very slightly. (Maria Mezcle sings a Taranto with 5/8 cajon backing). Perhaps combinations such as 7/8 or 9/4 compas cycles that use fandango form etc would be the way to go IMO.

I would like to ask the Flamenco Intel Department if the Lydian chord that Vicente uses all over is last two albums comes from a specific palo that I missed or if it is just "his new thing" (like added 9ths and seagull sounds).

I believe it looks something like this: X 0 6 6 4 0

Also appears as Lydian dominant version

+1 Lots and lots of possibilities with fandangos. Cantaores have done some exploration of it but as far as solo guitarra is concerned, we've hardly scratched the surface IMO.

There are guitarists in Huelva who can accompany fandangos for hours without repeating a single falseta.

I hear you. I probably could have said things better in my previous post because I didn't mean to say there isn't already a lot of quality stuff out there in fandangos. There is!

It's more that I feel there is a potential there that hasn't been explored yet, unlike say bulerias where flamencos have done a lot of that exploring already. The Moron guys back in the day could accompany bulerias for hours I'm sure, and it was great stuff. But a lot of new aspects of bulerias were "discovered" later on by others. That doesn't seem to have happened for fandangos. Of course, depending on one's own tastes, that may be a good thing or a bad thing.

Listen to the 1st Mujer Klorica album for some unique ways of accompanying Fandangos, Solea & Tarantos amongst many others
