As Spielberg's film Munich is in the cinema now, the French television channel M6 brought out a documentary last night (which will be repeated this Wednesday after 1am) during which Chico Bouchikhi, one of the founders of Gypsy Kings and now Chico and the Gypsies appeared recounting his brother's Ahmed Bouchikhi's assassination by the Mossad in Norway after the Munich Olympics in 1972 where a Palestinian commando executed 11 Israeli athletes. Mistaking Ahmed for the Black September chief Ali Hassan Salameh, in 21 July 1973 at 10.30pm, the Mossad hit squad eliminated Chico's brother.
Chico has been very quiet about this story, seldom told. I must say he was also very noble and magnanimous, asking for an official Israeli acknowledgement of the mistake before his mother dies. He received a personal and unofficial apology from Avi Pazner, the Israaeli ambassador to Paris.
Chico Bouchikhi has been the ambassador of Unesco.
I don't enjoy Chico and the Gypsies' music at all, in that respect, Gypsy King was definitely better. But I must admit Chico's dignity was admirable in that programme.
