Thumb placment question?? 
Hi crew, i was doing some arpeggio exercises and i'm curious.... should my thumb be getting to the string early and resting on it before striking it, or should i hit the string normaly?? I hope you understand what i mean. I guess resting the thumb is a preparation tactic. i don't know know
What do you think?

I think 'planting' or 'preparation' is generally accepted as a good pratice habit since is ensures that you have a consistant striking action. However, after practicing a scale or arpeggio like this slowly you would 'let go' and have the feel of striking the string from the air so to speak. The planting practice done previously will still be in there somewhere and give you the accuracy but you won't be cutting the notes off too short while playing. This has been my experience anyway :)

Hi Larone,

it depends

Really though, normally if you have your thumb sitting on the 6th string and want to play it, you just push in. Also, usually the thumb should automatically move to rest on a lower string anyways and will be sitting there waiting to strike, so it *usually* shouldn't be an effort to get it up there quick enough. Otherwise you swing your thumb up and cut it right into the string - this can be done as well to to get a good sound or for tension to get your thumb going for a run.
