YRG Gen2 Midi Guitar

I picked one of these up today to try for 'silent' practice. I get full sound through the headphones on it, but nobody else hears it. Also has a standard guitar amp jack and a mini usb for PC use.

Has anyone else tried one?

Setup has a lot of options. I've been fiddling with the different settings to get it to behave the way I want. It will never sound like a real classical guitar, but it does let you run through right and left hand work and you can hear if the notes are correct.

Neck is narrower than my Ferrer, so it takes a slight adjustment, but no different to what I do when I get my acoustic out to play some fingerpicking.

It has no strings on the neck. There are raised rubber 'strings' between each fret. You can hammer-on and pull off, but you cannot pull off to an open string (unless you capo at 1st fret and transpose the instrument a semitone - workaround).

It has 15 guitar voices from acoustic through nylon, electric and Banjo. Also synth voices. Backing tracks are built in as are chorus and synth additions. You could plug it into some Notation software and record your compositions. There's also a 'Tap' mode that lets you use the frets like a huge keyboard.

I tried it as a controller with my Aria (Garritan) synth software and it worked there too, but didn't seem to have any decay. Probably me not knowing how to set the voices up though as I'm no synth expert.

I'm not sure I'm going to keep it, but it is a fun piece of gear that is perhaps not as useful for Flamenco as it might be for Rock or Acoustic.

Its a cool tool to make tabs in Guitar Pro, or in lieu of a piano midi controller.

But you cannot practice nylon string sort of stuff on it.

Buy a cheap Yamaha nylon, and put a sponge under the strings near the bridge.

I am extremely interested in this Todd, your review sounds like it might be just the sort of thing I have been looking for.
I had an earlier midi guitar which was actually set up to simulate a nylon string pretty well but it was no use as a midi input device as the midi was so dirty and took for ever to clean up.
Does this really replace a keyboard for clean midi entry ?

I would be very grateful for a bit more reassurance before buying as the last one I got ended up with a pupil as a free practice guitar. Any info gratefully received,

GB,
You have to play VERY cleanly, but it works.

There are some cons of course, but overall, it works pretty well.
Definitely miles better than a piano controller for guitar tabs.

The Gen2 is not very expensive, so thats a good thing too.

Thanks for info Todd I think you've made my mind up for me, seems like this sort of thing could have been available years ago. I had the Yamaha EZAG toy thing and it could have been set up to do midi well but instead it tried to emulate the resonance of a real guitar which made it surprisingly pleasing to listen to but created a screen full of mud through the midi driver. I guess a pick and free floating RH and single line entry are the way to go for midi with guitar.
Hope you and the family are well, the boy must be about ready to throw a ball back to you by now.

Thanks GB! I think you'll do well with it.

Yeah, the boy is doing it all. :) He now has a 9 month old little brother, and has
mixed emotions about it. LOL
