I 've got a pretty metallic sound with my guitar flamenca negra when doing the buleria compas. On the accentuated beats, let's say the first, that is to say the 12, with index finger.
I hear that on a lot a video, demonstrating high quality guitars, but i don't really like it. (i.e. Diego del morao playing the 1979 Barba negra on youtube)
I think some of you enjoy this sound but is there others who try to avoid it and how ? (if possible)

Whaaaa???? To me that sound IS flamenco, it's what separates the men from the boys. I just paid good money to be sure I HAVE that sound....... If you insist on "classicaling" up your flamenco you could do the following: Raise your bridge Use old strings Play softer Play around with where your striking in relation to the bridge.

In general I agree with Leñador but sometimes a guitar just has too much "clatter". You could experiment by raising the bridge by a small amount by inserting a thin piece of wood under it - or even use paper. If you like what you get you can shape a new piece of bone of the right height to the profile of the existing bridge.

Thanks for reading, Franck.
Well at first I was gonna react like Leñador with frustration, until I checked out the Diego del morao video you didn't link to. I think I know what the problem is. I have experienced this sound with brand new High tension bass strings, where you get an intrusive THWONG sound that over powers the rest of the chord tones. What you want is a more midrange CRUNCH/POP with the golpe involved....more like he gets here:
If that is case, I recommend two things, 1. Try normal or at least lower tension strings. I find the ideal sound with Labella 820's with either red or black trebles. Very balanced when strumming hard on chords. 2. Try attacking the chord as Tomatito does without bending and flicking off of thumb. He does that too sometimes but with this guitar he gets the sound he wants by just golpe and index down no flick on the A chord. (For the Bb that is held during compas he alway flicks for a different sound).

I am one who doesn't like an overly percussive rasgueado, and yes they have their place. It just depends on what style of sound you like. I like to hear more tone than finger nail bashing. Two things I have discovered that achieve this:
raise your palm further from the strings so that only your finger tips hit the strings.
Hit the strings more parallel to the top instead down into the top.
I know this may be contrary to what some people would say so YMMV.

Cervantes,
What you explain is exactly what i'm trying to do. However, i'm curious to know what create this sound. It happen when we strike the string from above and it makes it slap just like we catch it from below. Looking closely, it does not seems to touch the fret.

Yes I have La Bella 820 reds, medium tension, on one of my guitars now, they have a great sound. On the other guitar I trying a set of D' Addario Por- Arte" composite core EJ25B , black trebles, custom tension, I like them as well, very crisp, after the initial stretching in process gets stable. Just my experimenting with strings, experience.

Watched the video, it's just slightly over the top for me. Guarantee those strings are brand spanking new(maybe D'adarios?) I bet in 2-3 days those strings will sound perfect. Aren't LaBella known for being pretty warm??
