I had a guitar shipped from Spain to the US. The guitar case was put inside a cardboard box of dimensions 20 cm X 46 cm X 145 cm, or 8" x 18" x 45". I think UPS or Fedex should have this kind of boxes. The box was stuffed with foam to prevent the case from knocking around. Hope this helps.

It's a Cibeles case, synthetic and kinda hard but not ABS. The interior (styrofoam) is very snug to the guitar.
I am trying to convince my friend to just put the case inside a cardboard box with some added stuffing. When I received the guitar it just had 2 pieces of thin foam between the case and the cardboard box and everything was ok.
The receipt from the purchase is with the guitar, is it necessary for the insured shipping? I was thinking of having UPS collect it but I don't really know how that (the insurance) works..

If you're looking for an economical way to ship from France to Portugal, if the French Post Office is too painful, try www.happy-post.com. You leave the package in your local Relais for collection. There is a tracking number. I would pack it nicely inside a box and stuffed with kraft paper, bubblewrap and the like to make the guitar stable inside the box. I would take insurance as well. Try the site and get an estimate.

That's the kind of case my guitar came in from Japan and it was just a box and some foam top and bottom. Seemed totally fine. It had labeling too though, FRAGILE, THIS SIDE UP. You don't need to prove insurance, the more insurance you want the more you pay, you could insure a coconut for $1,000 if you wanted to. I've heard UPS is pretty good through Europe. Just don't let the Los Angeles USPS touch and you'll be fine.

Anders send my guitar in a case similar to that with bits of foam in various places to stop all movement inside the case. If your friend doesn't have foam he could use socks and T shirts.

As the French Post Office will not insure anything over €1500, if the guitar is of a higher value, it will have to be either DHL, UPS or Fedex. You can get a large quantity of bubblewrap from Castorama.

Maybe try to find a music store, they might have a pre-made cardboard guitar box to put it in, just for International shipping purposes. I had a guitar sent to me here in Thailand from Hong Kong, this is what the sender did, just a suggestion.
Also I had a guitar sent to me from Spain, they used the same kind of guitar hard case, foam like with canvas outer cover, it was the Cibeles case pictured in above thread, they wrapped it is bubble wrap several times, then used silver electricians tape to cover bubble wrap, was very sturdy, made it to Thailand just fine. Anyway good luck -

Tell your friend to go to a packing supply store and buy large blister bubble wrap, and wrap the case in two plastic trash bags. Then wrap the bubble wrap over the case and tape it securely. Buy of make a double wall cardboard box and fit the case in the box, add bubble wrap under the guitar and fill all the corners where the wrapped case does not touch with rolls of bubble wrap or strong kraft paper wadded to make shock absorbers. Make sure the case does not travel inside the box, it should be locked in place inside the box.
Foam peanuts are good too, but I like bubble pack better. I also make sheets of cardboard that fit inside the box and tape them together to make thick plates and tape them inside the box- this makes the box heavier, but much stiffer protection around the guitar.
