You have done a magnificent job, Pimientito. I have made it clear that Sabicas is my all-time favorite, bar none. I am pleased that you have taken the time and effort to catalogue his ouvre. He was, and is, the greatest, in my opinion.
Bill

Thanks very much guys. Actually I am still finding a few more recordings out there so I will update this list next month. I'm not even going to try to do all the albums and reissues but I think I can finish this EP and 7" single section fairly easily.
RE: Sabicas — Discography (in reply to Pimientito)
Hi Guys, recently I came across a version of Furioso that appears to be an Australian test pressing on the Festival label, I cannot find any info online so I thought you guys maybe able to give me a guide as to its value?

I just wanted to update this thread with a few more additions. I found copies of the "Furioso" and "Flamenco Virtuoso Volume 4" EPs that are already listed. Here is the cover information. The Furioso disc is undated.

RE: Sabicas — Discography (in reply to Pimientito)
I found another volume of "Tres Guitarras tiene Sabicas". This volume 3 completes the set of EPs. On the back is track listing for the 3 volumes and all 4 volumes of Flamenco Virtuoso.

There are a lot of old 78 Gramophone recordings out there too which I hadn't counted on but make this discography a bit more complex than I first thought. Here are the first three.

RE: Sabicas — Discography (in reply to Pimientito)
Here are 2 more new additions. !Flamenco! with Carmen Amaya and Sabicas which is undated but Im pretty sure comes from the late 50s. The 4 tracks are Tiento a mayor y menor, Amanacer Arabe, Sevillanas and Alegrias The second disc Salero de España with Sabicas and Dolores Vargas was released in 1964. It only has 2 tracks, Aires de San Fernando and Arabesca

RE: Sabicas — Discography (in reply to Pimientito)
I was checking my copy of !Flamenco! with a reference online and I found the same disc but with a different track listing. This was pretty confusing for a while until I realised that the index reference was one digit different. So just to be clear...there are 2 EPs called "flamenco! with identical covers both released in Spain but with different track listings.
This second disc has the tracks Cuando Pa Chile me voy, Fandango de Malaga, Jaleo Canastero and Lamento Gitano

Wow! Can you play them?
I don’t see any dates on them. Are there any?
The earliest transcriptions of Sabicas’s music that I’m aware of date from 1946–7, and these may well be some of the pieces in question.
On the record deck (even a dinosaur like myself hasn’t got a deck for playing 78s any more).
I have a USB record deck that can digitise 78s. If I get time next week I will upload some of the old recordings for you.
Going back to the EPs, I noticed that the reverse sleeve of the Salero de España EPs lists 3 more recordings. I assume these also come from around 1964 since the index numbers match the other recordings from that year. Here are the first 2.

That makes sense. The Brunswick discs are later releases of older material. I'm sure these discs were released in 1964 even if the material was originally produced in 1960.
Continuing the subject of "Furioso!" I found another 2 Eps also called Furioso. It would seem that Furioso is as common to Sabicas as Entre dos Aguas is to Paco. I found an EP called Furioso! vol.3 with 4 tracks by Sabicas and Escudero. Gitanos Trianeros, Fantasia Andaluza, Temas Andaluces and Pregon Gaditano. Listed on the back of the sleeve are the other two Furioso EPs. Sabicas and Escudero play one track "Villancico Flamenco" on volume 2. There are no Sabicas tracks on Volume 1.
The disc is undated but I am Guessing it comes from 1961 since the back says "Printed in Germany 9.61"

Don’t record companies drive you crazy?
These are taken from another of those discs thrown together from bits of different albums. I’ve reviewed the MP3 version (which seems to be unavailable in the US) here.
I haven’t bothered to review the vinyl version, as it’s currently unavailable.
Here is a rare 6 track EP with cante tracks by Porrinas de Badajoz, Nina de la puebla, El principe Gitano, Miguel de los Reyes, Rafeal Farina. Track 1. Verdiales "Malaga, novia del Mar" by Enrique Montoya is accompanied by Sabicas, Diego Castellon and Goyo Reyes.
The disc was produced in 1962 and comes with a colour booklet.

Here is another unlisted EP entitled Furioso! Volume 4. Its absolutely infuriating that the EPs all have same name with different dates track listings and reference numbers. This volume is the original Columbia recording and the EP is dated 1959. The Brunswick editions were re- released under licence 2 years later but have completely different tracks on them. Its extremely confusing indeed!! On the back of this EP are references to the other 3 Volumes with track lists. They all appear to have the same cover photo.

Where are you finding all this vinyl? Do second-hand record shops there have Flamenco sections?
If you recall, when we originally discussed this, Dave K identified the guitarist on the right as Dolores’s husband, José Castellón. I wonder what relation he was to Sabas? The name can hardly be a coincidence…

Since doing the Paco discography I have become extremely good at tracking down recordings. Some of them I am finding by blind luck. Second hand book shops and record shops in Spain have flamenco sections although its 80 percent old sevillanas and rumba recordings. I also go to a lot of sunday markets and find recordings in boxes of records. This step just requires a lot of patience and looking.
From there I can usually find references to other recordings on the backs of the covers. Using the index numbers and some refined internet searches I can usually find either library or dealer references to the recordings. Occasionally I will spot a different issue on ebay but mostly its a slow painful process of going through different internet adverts and collections. It seems to be paying off though because the discography is becoming more definitive.
Pepe Castellon was a cousin of Sabicas. (although that could mean anything since "primo" can be half cousin, second cousin, etc) Since Jose and Pepe are the same name I assume that they are the same person. Some discs credit Jose Castellon and some credit Pepe Castellon with Dolores Vargas.
RE: Sabicas — Discography (in reply to Pimientito)
I hope Paul likes this next post I was almost as excited as when I found the Antonio Mairena/Paco recording. Here are 2 more ultra rare Sabicas recordings. Both are 78 gramophone recordings. The first is another recording with Chato de las Ventas and the second is with Chato de Jerez. The Chato de Jerez recording has the label in quite bad condition so it can only be read with the flash photograph. However you can still make out the track information.

Just to update this thread with a few additions. On the reverse sleeve of the Salero de España EP I was able to list 2 more EPs earlier this year. I finally tracked down the recordings on the Brunswick Label "Sabicas" and "Viva la Gracia"

RE: Sabicas — Discography (in reply to Pimientito)
I also tracked down 2 Columbia EPs both called "Flamenco -Carmen Amaya y Sabicas" and both with identical front covers. To add to the confusion I recently found a third recording on the Brunswick label with an identical cover to the Columbia recordings. It is undated and has 3 tracks; Soleares, Sevillanas and Fandango de Malaga. Its no wonder that the record companies label tracks incorrectly when the original recordings are so confusing. Here is the latest addition and the 3 discs together. I have not been able to track down any more EPS to date.
