Calima

I've been listening to this over the long weekend. What an interesting album. I would put it up there with some of pacos "experimental albums".

Its been a while since I have listened to Nunez. REally nice composition.

What do you guys think of this album?

With the exception of 4 pieces....solea por Buleria, pasadoble, and rumba with Strunz and Farah, and Sevilla, it's basically a rehash of pieces he previously recorded on Gallo Azul and Flamencos en Nueva York. The recording quality is warmer but not necessarily "better" IMO. Of the previously recorded tracks I would say only the Solea has some interesting variation that I prefer to the original. Nuñez won an award for this album and he thought it curious himself since 60% of it was old material. Alula records (Angel Romero and friends) was the producer of this and they wanted to promote nuñez in USA by redoing Jucal and this record. With Jucal they removed the sublime Rondeña and replaced it and added 3 tracks from Carmen Cortes' Yerma. I like one of the additional tracks but to remove Hacia Mi was not forgiveable IMO. I love nuñez and love Calima though I must admit the old tracks were done better before, but it's worth to own this disc just for the excellent Solea Por Buleria.

As a side note, Nuñez was not permitted to get more of this disc printed so he edited some track intros and changed the order and re copyrighted the whole thing and produced himself on Gallo Azul (his own label). The beautiful intro to the Solea por Buleria is therefore omitted which is a shame. So it's important to check your track listing to understand which version you own.

The alula records original starts with Solea por Buleria (Plaza Arenal), and the gallo Azul edited version starts with Calima.
