I have a knocked about guitar - the bout has a huge crack , and on the front there is a big crack from the bridge almost to the bout , its been suggested i get someone to repair using clefts ?(T shape repair i think)
the cracks have been glued , yet im wondering how much harder does this make the repair work.
The top is spruce back and sides rosewood , also interested how luithers here feel about using spruce on the top how does it differ than cedar ? why would a builder use spruce instead of cedar for the top ? i always think spruce is used more in classical guitar construction??

You mean cleats? Cleats come in varying shapes, I don't think them already being glued s a huge deal unless it's a terrible glue job or terrible glue. We'll see what a luthier instead of a carpenter says though Spruce is more common to flamenco and cedar more common to classical.

Spruce is a LOT more commonly used in flamencos than cedar. I would say 80% at least. Some of us like using both for flamencos, but there are builders only using spruce.
Are you sure you didnt mix up the two woods. Spruce is the light colored one, while cedar is the brownish colored one.
Cedar is not more common than spruce on classicals, but its used more than on flamencos.
Big cracks from the bridge to the lower bout are always critical and should be done by some whi knows. Using cleats is perfectly correct if the crack is very open. Using a splint can be better or worse depending on the crack and who does the job.

thankyou Anders for your input , yes i think i had a brain splaT -- should type when tired-- the problem is a professional repair person where i live countryside in china ! my chinese is good but cleats ! ill have too work on that.
do people feel spruce has a more clearer defined melodic edge (i.e the melody can sing more ? )
