Pepe Habichuela

Well,I dont know much ...and because of that probably I say wrong things ,but
really I think I'm sincere when I say them...I wouldnt want to be suspected to be
malitious or sarcastic.

Seen the Habichuela Encuentro ....this is not just old stuff ,this guy plays things
like I could expect to hear from Paco in the old days. This Encuentro is really
good...I'm just watching it now, havent finished yet ...but my respects also
to the palmeros ,there is really more to this than I thought.

I'm at the alegrias part,superb playing .
I like him ....after each of his falsetas I tend to say "Ole".

I would like more opinions on this player ...as I discover every day how naive
am I in flamenco(also watched Riqueni's encuentro..but this should be another thread).

in the introduction of his bulerias there is this arpeggio that Tomatito uses in his
encuentro ,I dont know who played it first ...but does it matter?
(also seen some riqueni with some similar stuff to Nunez ,who teached who?)

Pepe's video is probably my favorite from the Encuentro series. I'm working on his Solea right now. Difficult but very fun.

Damn , damn , damn .....what the ******************?
Well,I happen to watch some tv show called "Tesoros de la guitarra flamenca ".

I'm watching the Nunez episode .Seen him very young playing that
Siguiriyas that Grisha plays in one of his videos .I think it's called Remache
(but I dont know for sure .....I got to learn some spanish. What does Remache means?)

Grisha ...u have to practice more .

Damn, damn, damn ...where is this gonna end ....dont wanna practice 50 years!!!

There is no end ...is it ?

By the way , really good tv show ....seen the episode on riqueni also.
May I should stick with my school and become engineer ...that's not so bad

quote from Nunez :
"the guitar is like an animal , sometimes u can rule him but sometimes he rules u"
(sometimes I understand some spanish cause is not that different to romanian)

Anders gave me it for Christmas. Pepe Hab. is a monster (as Todd once remarked) and still my first and favourite, along with Tomatito and El Capullo's entire band.

Pepe Habichuela, yeah he kicks butt. In rito y geografia del Baile he is really charismatic with dance acompaniment. Encuentro is great stuff. But guess what, his older brother Juan Habichuela, is better, and totally different style! Check him out. The whole family (Ketama and Co.) is great at flamenco.

I don't know, check out La Tumbona by Paco.

Tesoros, yeah, great program. I jammed with the narrator in Spain (Jose Manuel Gamboa) great guy, plays a "lefty" Conde. Nunez, Franco, Tomatito, Pepe Habichuela...but you have not seen the program on Paco? Tico Tico, Impetu, Panaderos, Rondena, Solea, Entre dos Aguas, La Barrosa (with Conde Blanca peg head in Mezquita in Cordoba). I just gave a copy to ToddK of that program. Nobody played, or plays like that.

Ricardo,

I'd like to know how to get my hands on that one too. Is that the "La Barrosa" for which Paco plays in a big old church? I think I might have seen that part.

Wow, so I guess Pepe's video will be the first that I purchase from the encuentro series. I was thinking Moraito or even Chicuelo, but didn't really consider Pepe. So, Pepe's the man, 'eh?

RE: Pepe Habichuela (in reply to sorin popovici

Ricardo ....I dont find that thread where Grisha compared your picado speed
with Paco's ,and u said "in my dreams".I thought u were modest...I still look at that video
with you and Todd, and say wow ..."in my dreams" I could learn any guitar part.

Anyway ,I've seen Paco de Lucia sextet live in Buenos Aires 1986 ...well, yeah ...u have your reasons for beeing modest .Never ever had I suspected that he was(maybe he still is) that good.

Flo , check that one out ...but be merciful with your pet ...he (or she) didnt know any better,
like I didnt before seeing this.

He improvises smth in the begining(I believe but maybe it's from a piece )
and then everything goes to fandango ...playing some Aires choqueros falsetas.
then ....then ...etc

And I thought I has such a good practice ....inocence is a gift

RE: Pepe Habichuela (in reply to sorin popovici

Yeah I have that video (Buenos Aires 86). The filming is not the best but good playing. Now 10 years later you have this video:

https://www.flamenco-world.com/tienda/shop.php?&vshopferca=64b05e8743047260df66db6db5998fbd&op_shop=show&id_prod=3442&id_cat=7

I think he plays better, and faster in this. Unfortunately, La Barrosa is not on the DVD, but I have a bootleg VHS of this concert and that is really the tightest I have ever seen him play. But this DVD is worth to buy just for the Rondena and Bulerias solos. And Columbianas? Oh wait that is not there either. Well, it is good anyway.

Foget about my lazy picados. Check out Grisha's Panaderos to hear someone "as fast as Paco", no joke.

well,i;m gonna explode tonight I looked at Riqueni ,Paco listened Grisha..
...and now I'm afraid to listen some Jeronimo Maya ...never listened him,my first time.
But u mentioned him in another thread about crazy playing ...comparing his crazyness
to Sabicas chromatic stuff.

I have some of his stuff, and I like him alot. Very nice tone, traditional yet mellow, "woody" they call it. Peghead lover too.

I am surprised no one in this thread mentioned his work with the Bollywood strings. I loved it. The Indian music really does back up his falsetas alot. And he has some of the nicest falsetas I have heard. Really a superb sense of melody this dude has.
