I don't know much about music theory or jazz but i am sure Al Di Meola contributed to the evolvement of the guitar in his nisch, but at the same time it's weird he is so widely known while guys like Pat Metheny is not.
I always thought that Pat Metheny never got the concept of a riff/hook.. maybe more people feel that way about his music. Maybe one day I'll learn to appreciate it but I've tried a few times in the last 15 years and it still is too boring for me. Thankfully Vicente doesn't sound like Pat.

OK, I stood on the side lines long enough...Guess i have to add my 2 cents
I agree the guy is a monster technically on the guitar.....so what?
Whats the point of a big flurry of notes if not done with a truly melodic or music style that is truly unique?
No doubt his music is technically very accurate & played perfect but it seldom makes a statement musically. I mean musically I feel he lacks feeling or something is just not there...
Whereas when Paco played he truly composed & created music that made a statement. Even Vicente, Moraito & a lot of other Flamenco guitarist have truly created music that may have a flurry of notes but they played with taste & feeling.
Another example...Going back to my Heavy metal days...take Eddie Van Halen....Eddie would play fast but played with feeling & a truely unique style that made him into a guitar legend.
For me their has to be more than just technical perfection & blazing notes to make a guitarist great!!! My 2 cents

Well said. -
Say what you want, there was one piece from Al which, howsoever fakemenco, was great in all respect, including musicality. To dismiss a piece like that I´d say borders on musical frigidity. Don´t know the title, though. Had it on cassette. Unfortunately, it was not contained on the one or two venyls I have from him.

OK so why are you dragging Vicente in to this? He is not a Jazz musician as far as i know, why would he sound like Pat Metheny?

Yeah very profound indeed
Not profound. Subjective. Only based on what I know from him, which isn´t all his discography. I´ve been suggested to certain works of him before on the foro, but havn´t yet come to check them out.
The stuff that I am familair with however never touched me, and me really is no snob at all.
