Cleaning a guitar neck

Not having my best day. At lunchtime I slit the top of my left thumb with a kitchen knife so wrapped it in a plaster to stem the bleeding. This evening I was then playing guitar and noticed a sticky sensation on the back of the neck. It turns out that small balls of adhesive from the plaster had rolled off the edge of the dressing as I was playing and rubbed into grey smears down the back of the neck. The adhesive seems to be resistant to a damp kitchen towel but I'm afraid of using anything stronger for fear of damaging the finish (nitro). Any recommendations? Thanks

Thanks a lot. Do you know if that is generally safe or only certain brands - the stuff in our kitchen has corn alcohol and 'naturally derived surfactant', whatever that is, as its main ingredients? I just want to double check before finishing off the day by needing to get the neck refinished :-)

I don't know about that but the regular stuff (like Ajax/Windex?) to clean windows would take that glue off immediately.

Try "lemon-oil" (has nothing to do with lemons) an acid-free mineral oil.

Try some olive oil to loosen/soften. Alcohol could affect the finish.

If you're sure its nitro you can use almost anything except lacquer thinner or acetone. Paint thinner or naphtha come to mind but start with plain old windex as was suggested.
