baile identification

hey accompanists!

where on the difficulty scale is identifying a palo/baile only by the dance?

Like, if a dancer starts dancing a SxB, or Buleria or Alegrias, with the tempo marking being the same, could you tell them apart just by the language of dance?

If so, any pointers other than taking dance lessons?

thanks

I'm curious what the actual working flamencos have to say but I'll share what I've kind of observed.
To me, it ALL looks similar but at different counts and different tempos. Marcaje looks like marcaje, llamada looks like llamada, escobilla etc no matter the palo. Of course they have there differences but the overall motions are super similar looking to me. In fact without music I don't think I could tell you SxB from alegrias and the only other way I could tell another palo without music would be from tempo and count. I've developed weird names and associations in my head to help me identify the parts like "oh that pirate move, this is llamada" or "repetitive break dancey thing, just marcaje right now" lol Without music footwork will give it away, there are certain rhythms you tend to hear in certain palos. The only thing that looks super unique and obvious to me is fiesta bulerias stuff.
My only pointer would be work with a dancer that knows what your supposed to be playing, and can say "that's not right", that helped me a good amount. That's just how I've survived but likely a real pro has a much more informed, enlightened view and insight.

Rhythmically you shouldn't be able to tell a difference as they are all part of the same family. But there are some specific footwork patterns and llamadas that make it obvious....but without those I don't think anyone could tell (from the back guitarists chair position). However from the front, you might get a sense by face and body posture. Moving around a lot and smiling it's probably Alegria, holding a strong stature and a very serious look is probably solea/ or solea por buleria. Buleria is up tempo and part of any dance in this family, but on it's own it too might have obvious "improvisation" type steps used in the juerga for short letras...as opposed to say Buleria de Cadiz.

In the end I honestly feel your quesion totally aribitrary becomes the music is the thing that will define this in the end.
