This is not the first time this carcass has come up for auction. It has some authenticity problems as well as no complete top. The absence of the complete top makes a restoration somewhat fruitless as the top is really the soul of the guitar and the part which really gives it credibility as a Santos Hernandez. If someone were to make a new top for it, it would really no longer be a Santos.
In that state without an authenticated Santos top that is a lot of money to pay. Last time it was up for auction I consulted a dealer who has seen many guitars by Santos and the dealer raised some questions about other parts of the guitar being made by Santos. If it really was a good project one of the big dealers with enough capital to invest in it and hire a restorer to being it back to playing condition would have already taken it on a project. Best to move on. For that money you could get a Manuel de la Chica in good condition and that would be a better investment.
In present state it is an interesting hulk, like a dismasted old sail boat with half a deck and no keel. Fascinating to look at, but in the end a hole in the water to toss your money into.
Gurnee is about an hour drive to Evanston (R.E. Brune's place). I wonder if the owner made the trip? Obviously a new soundboard needs to be installed. I am not sure the guitar could really be called a Santos given a totally new soundboard needs to be installed. It is interesting that with this much damage the rosette remained intact. An intact Hernandez could bring in the amount the seller mentioned.
milanuncios had about a year ago great condition hernandez for 12 000euro in granada. This one seems overpriced even if some complete ones go for 15-20k euros.
Yeah, way overpriced but it does come with a Calton case;-) I suppose the rosette is original but even at half the asking bid, it would take a ton of money to get it restored and as has been stated above, it's no longer a Santos with a new top. Then there's the question of authenticity. Kind of reminds me of an old car with a rusted out body and various parts in boxes, without an engine.
I am still puzzled how the rosette remained almost undamaged while everything else was almost destroyed and/or cut away. The story behind the demise of the top could be interesting. Could this may be the guitar Diego Del Gastor fell on as written by Pohren--or was it George? Probably not but spun in creative way and that $6K+ price might be a bargain.
By the way, does anyone know if Santos really put his business guitar that far inside his guitar that one would need to strip off the fret board?
Appears that this beauty has been sold. A best offer was accepted, however the amount of the best offer is not revealed by Ebay. That shows me that there is a buyer for almost anything.
