Soleares

I am often told that in the early stages of learning Flamenco, it is best to focus heavily on being able to play and appreciate Soleares. I am just wondering how true this is, and if anyone can tell me why exactly. I have been looking through a few and it dosen't seem particularly easier or harder than say, Farruca.

I don't know....Paco Pena makes you play Tientos. Anyway, it's slow and that helps. It's also a 12 count palo so maybe that's part of it.

Farruca is straight 4/4, Solea is a 12 beat cycle and has been called the mother of all palos. Solea is muy flamenco, some would argue Farruca isn't even proper flamenco.

Solea is more difficult because of the compas. Getting that 12 beat cycle in your head is SO important. It is the foundation of Alegrias, Bulerias, Seguiriyas, Solea Por Bulerias etc, but Solea is the easiest to place to start, IMO, as it has a tempo that is not too slow or too fast, and with a pattern of accents that is reasonably straightforward for the beginner to follow. The other 12 beat palos are generally thought of as harder to play.

Rasgeos are very clearly to hear in soleares.
Never thought about that but it seems right; soleares is the easiest and therefore best to begin with.
