Flamenco Lessons on DVD Question

Hello all. I am new to flamenco and don't have much guitar experience in general. I have been told there are several excellent instructors in my area (Los Angeles, CA), which is great news. I also recently read about the 4 DVD/Book Flamenco set, "Guitarra Flamenca en 48 Clases" by Jose Manuel Montoya ($120.00US). Has anyone head of this DVD program? The price is hight, but the reviews are quite good and it seems a good fit for a true beginner like me. For the price of 2+ lessons, this program seems to have quite a bit of information that I could study at my own place before seeking personal instruction. My question is, would I be better served by waiting a bit and utilizing a course like this until I have acquired a few basic chords/strums, etc. before investing in personalized instruction? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Jose Manuel Montoya has some free lessons online, you could try those out and see if they're to your liking. I have seen the DVD and IMO it's just OK. I wouldn't really recommend it as your primary source of information. Instead, I would go to the LA public library and checkout the Graf-Martinez and the Juan Serrano books - try before you buy. The Juan Serrano is pretty elementary, but it should be a good start if you don't have much guitar experience. The Graf-Martinez gets good reviews here in this foro, but I've not seen it myself.

Don't stick to just one method, use whatever you can get your hands on. Your library has a number of other teaching books in their catalog. You'll want to supplement that with material from this foro, from YouTube, and you will probably want to take at least a couple of lessons early on to guide you down the right path.
