More compas, less falsetas. (in reply to estebanana)

The next Challenge for playing should be called :
The Compas Challange-
Play two minutes of bulerias with two falsetas each one compas long. One in the first minute and one in the second minute. The challenge needs to include a llamada, a final close and two to four compasses of libre intro. No metronome tracks or palmas tracks. Live palmas allowed as a sub category.
The rest is a set of chords played in bulerias in A phrygian. The basic chords a few passing tonos. That is the set harmonic palette.
Or just go to the currently dormant, cante acompaniment thread (link below). The palmas in twos with taconeo 3,7,8,10,12 isn't such a difficult skill. I'm no expert but in my experience the best way to develop compas and learn to accompany dancers or singers comes from doing it, making mistakes and gradually learning. The cante accompaniment thread is a good place for lone practice.
you could play a great bulerias solo with two lousy falsetas if you had great rhythm. Today I don't think that's as true from a comparison standpoint because there are so many great guitarists that can do it all
I couldn't agree with you more, Mark. There seems to be a higher standard today by guitarist playing solo. The rule I was taught the compass was everything. As long as the rhythm's integrate was maintained a sour note here or there was over looked. But, with higher disciplined players these days, perfection is the standard. It's harder work, but I'm sure it's rewarding. But, call me old fashion. I find playing with singers and dancers ( on rare occasion and mostly belly dancers) the most rewarding flamenco experience within my own limitations.

I think I'm in but it's VERY specific. We haven't had the best turn out in the world on these challenges to begin with and I don't see making it this specific helping that situation. Also, one compas falsetas??? That's nearly just a complicated compas variation at that point no??

I vote for bulería sonikete challenge, play whatever you want but the one with the best groove and sonikete wins the challenge That will be the most flamenco flamenco challenge in the history of foroflamenco

You´re right. Its not a word I write soften when writing Spanish. Besides, I do make mistakes when I´m writing and talking and more so when its not my first language. I can imagine that the same thing happens to you. I´ve been here 13 years. My spanish level is high, but I´m still a guiri and I will always be, so dont be afraid that they will think I´m Spanish. I will never be. My accent, my language errors will always be present, but more so my looks and my behaviors will always be guiri. Its alright for me. I dont want to be anything else. And especially not something that would be completely impossible. So when I called foroflamenco for the world center of guiri flamenco, I included myself, just as i included you and the rest. It would be stupid to think we are anything else.

And on the other side of the argument.........
Ruben has just published a court document noting his victory for defamation against Juan Estrada regarding his person as well as Andalusian Guitars.
Juan Estrada was a manager at “De Lucia Gestion S.L” a society meant to manage Paco De Lucia’s official web site (www.pacodelucia.org) as well as their business of selling the now discontinued guitars made by Vicente Carrillo branded as “Paco de Lucia”.
Here is the court document published on Ruben's e-zine.

The point was to do what Mariano Cordoba said and play two falsetas and make a buleria around that.
Hell if I can play ten buleria falsetas anyone can. The thing is to make arte out of thin air and compas, that is difficult. If you listen to Delta Blues guitarists from along time ago, they can play the same riff over an over and you are riveted to it, why? Or Reverend Gary Davis barely touches the guitar or changes a chord and all this crazy sound comes out. That kind of stuff is difficult.
or live recordings of Tomatito playing for Camaron and he stretches out sections of compas on one chord like he is treading water and it holds your ear.
That is arte, a bag of falsetas played back to back always sound like a bag of falsetas. It's called challenge because it makes you do something you don't want to do. I was practicing cello this morning and I challenged myself to play 20 measures of Bach and change the fingerings, Wow, I sure got a of out of that, but at first I did not want to do it. Growth only comes when you do what you don't want to do.
RE: More compas, less falsetas (in reply to orsonw)
Just a great post, orsonw. I can only wonder how he contained himself from breaking into falsetas here and there. Camarón was on fire with letra after letra after letra, and Tomatito seemed to be enjoying it thoroughly.
It's been many years since I have heard of Keith Baylor - he's an old friend since when we played together at Amor de Dios back in the early 70's - anybody have an idea where he is?
I have not seen Keith since he was in San Antonio Texas in the mid 70's when Ciro was getting ready to do a tour with Chuni Amaya. (Carlos Rubio was Ciro's guitarist).
They used one of the dance studios here for their practice sessions. Keith stayed here for awhile, playing odd jobs; one of which was my playing job for dancers that I turned over to him, since I was employed with other work.
Years later he called me from some motel across town, late at night, that I wasn't able to get to, as he woke me up and I had no idea how to get there....Short lived stay as he and another guitarist had to leave town the next morning.

I have no idea where Mr. Baylor might be, but I do remember being very impressed with his playing when I met him in the early 80's. there is a guy trying to sell an andaulusional guitar and the price is pretty reasonable. It's a lefty and so am I and I have to admit temptation.......after all it's a Domingo Esteso Model 1929........with a cutaway BHAHAHAHAHA

It takes a lot of knowledge to be a credit to ones judgment of other peoples art, and I fail to see what contribution it has, unless there is full participation in the art itself.
True, we can count on suggestions to better the craft but to complain without giving a way to improve, is nothing more than evil speak.
I agree with Tom. Its time everyone left RD alone. There's no denying that he's a good guitar player with impressive skills. His style may not suit everyone's taste but that doesn't take away the fact the he is indeed a very talented guitar player who can run circles around most of us. Anyone who has been playing guitar for a while can work that much out. This is not to put anyone else down on this forum, simply a matter of fact. A good guitar player is a good guitar player- regardless of style or form. He may not be original but he is a great guitar player.
His selling or rather marketing may be objectionable to some or as I see, most. But thats okay. He does give some great advice and then some not so great advice in his videos. I say take what you need and ignore the rest.
Also, it is childish, immature and downright mean to beat the guy down constantly when he is not allowed the chance to defend himself. if that is the way of Flamenco- I certainly dont want to be a part of it.
I have no affiliations with RD and nor do I care to make any in the future. However, I think it is absurd that he is banned from this forum- this reminds me of Stalin like Fascism.
A lot of people are going on and on and on about how he is a cheat, phoney and should be horsewhipped. It just puts things in a bad taste and I'm left thinking that this is a forum mainly for people who need a platform to vent their inner aggression. People let him be. And be tolerant enough to allow people voice their opinions, even if you do not agree with it. have a debate. don't ban people for speaking their mind.Thats what forums are for. to have a debate/discussion on a topic.
