my back problem!

hi guys:

ive got annoying backache for many years. everytime i sit in my chair, grasp my guitar and play for few hours(mostly 2 hours), my back start paining, i have to lying in bed for awhile. i know that is my uncorrected pose made it. but even i sit straight up, my back can't stop aching(under the neck, the left part along the spine ). years ago, one doctor said that my back muscle has lost the flexibility, and become stiff. these years i have tried solve this problem by swiming, football, massage etc. in the past two years, my back's situation seems ok, coz i didn't play guitar too much. this year i start practice much more seriously and the backache become deteriorated. do you guys have faced that problem, and who knows how to fix it? should i give up playing guitar or playing in bed?

Don't play guitar for two hours! Take breaks every twenty minutes, half an hour, whatever. Take a walk or whatever, loosen it up. Then back to work. Our bodies in general work much better with intermittent work than sustained effort.

loop,

do either some yoga or tai chi chuan. im able to practice for over 3hrs a night cause of my martial arts and health regime, pain is usually a sign that the muscles in your back are not developped enough or you have a musculo-skelatal back problem brought on by improper lifting in your lifetime or previous damage.

Loop,

Besides Yoga and Taiji, there is also a method that will improve your condition a lot and you can practice at home (no equipment needed>) ; it is the Pilates method.
There are very good books you can find in amazon and other bookstores.
I can point some good ones for you if you want.

hope this helps

whoah loop,

you actually spelt tai chi chuan as taijiquan (which is the way most people in martial refer to it)

i met my teacher 5yrs ago at my university and he taught me the yang form and chi gung, been doing kung fu since i was 14 never had back problems since i took up the guitar .

pilates is good aswell and you may like to read up a little bit on alexander technique,
if you want i can send you some taichi exercise books in a pdf format.

I second that about Pilatas, it is great for strengthening stomach muscles to support your posture and back. Like the Alexander Technique it is was devised for actors, as opposed to middle aged housewives who want to look like Jane Fonda. There are some great videos and you can work out at home, no need for a class, it only takes about 20 minutes a day and the results are pretty instant. I started this week and can already feel and even see the muscles and have been told my posture has also improved. Yipeeee ay oh !!!

Hola loop,

Let me ask, what position do you sit in when you play? Guitar on left leg, right leg? A little more background information may reveal a possible solution.

i put guitar on my crossed right leg, but not too high. i supposed that my left shoulder keep rising a bit when i am playing, result in my back muscle stiff. many years ago ,when i played electric guitar(also sit in chair ), i was sitting in a wierd hunchback position, that's the pathogeny i think. i've heard pilat exercise before. i think that might help.
