What's Wynton Reading ?

Thanks first to Eric for pointing out this collaboration between Paco and Wynton.

Wynton channeling Miles Davis at 1.36 and Paco clearly enoyed it.

What do you guys think Wynton is reading here ? My money is on the keyboard player having written out a chord chart, any other ideas ?

Paco was maybe one of the last living musicians whom Wynton respected wholeheartedly.

Probably just reading the chord progressions.

Nice coincidence. Just saw Wynton with Jazz at Lincoln Center in town here 3 days ago.
Wonderful show if you get the chance.
This has me thinking about the idea of horns and flamenco guitar. Certainly flamenco guitar rhythm with horn lead is easy enough to see.
But what about horn playing the cante part? Seems like the saxophone would be a good representation of the passion in flamenco singing.
The reason I ask is my son plays alto sax and I thought that might be an interesting combo.
Anyone done/doing this?

Mark

With all the micro-tones and modulation I'm thinking maybe the trombone or slide whistle.

Thanks for the video D! Gotta be a chord chart…...

Paco made a record with sax playing the cante sound with someone (Iturraldí?) Horrible.

Ramon Montoya did the same, not bad at all but we have to scratch our heads as to the point since he had been playing for chacon already those melodies. Perhaps "easy listening" flamenco in 1930's??

reading ?/!! he's not reading anything .....why would he have to read anything?....or have someone write out a chord progression for him ...
you just get together and play /rehears and most things are probably self eveident ..the you ask a few questions to sort out any problems and away you go ...improvising .....
the thing that jazz musicians spend their whole lives doing ....
