Tension.

I never quite know how the tension in a chord sequence should be dealt with until I couple it with a melody.

And I never really have a strong sense of what my options are until I sing the melody and accompany myself on guitar. But when I do do this then sometimes music comes to life for me in a real interesting way.

Now last time I suggested singing there was a month long argument about whether or not it was a good idea. Lots of people feel judged when asked to sing.

So maybe I am asking this question. How do those of you who won't sing decide where the tension is and how you can make a narrative with your dynamics ? How do you draw listeners in and to try and make them feel.

And does anyone else despair of recordings where the peak volume is optimised so there is no dynamic narrative ? This can in my opinion leave all of the performers gestures like tricks, unconnected to a big picture. It is more like the performance of a talented news anchor reading well but without comprehension an autocue and bringing out unusual words like nuggets of technique but never conveying meaning only confidence and indifference.

How often are you performing? I was a professional (not flamenco) musician for years and performing made things very apparent- dynamically, emotionally that could only be hypothesised during rehearsal/arranging/writing. Over years and many performances I learnt a sense of what could work but playing live was the only true test. My intuition and intellectual theories were developed by having the experience of engaging with listeners.

And even then sometimes I'd come off stage thinking nothing much happened but reviews and audience would rave; on nights I thought the energy was great, audience members said not much was happening!

Also arrangements and dynamics that work well for recordings don't always work live and vice versa.

Play it like you mean it with whatever intensity is appropriate. Do not look bored, do not appear superior or disdainful to your audience, and do play with sincerity. Connect yourself and your music to the audience.

I dont sing but I write the voices for the vocals too. If you think about it, it doesnt matter if you sing, its all just melodies.

Dynamics are always there because perceived intensity isnt just about having a brickwall limiter or not.

Yeah, D, sing it. That's how you tap into your intuition as a living, feeling musician. Missed the argument-thread--glad I did!

I happen to believe that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

So yes, flamenco or whatever else I happen to be working on.

Even you might appreciate singing a different tune once in a while.

After all, flamencos speak of "decir", so go ahead ...
