Now living in Granada - Anyone have ... 
I've been taking lessons here with a great teacher, Ramon Del Paso, and trying to jam with as locals whenever possible. As a relative flamenco beginner I am currently using a china-made Cort classical guitar that I had paid about $140 maybe 6 years ago. I put a laminate-golpeador on it already, and for the price it plays really well (even my teacher said so, he offered to buy it off me when i get a new one, to give to his young son), but it's still a cheap, cheap guitar. It doesn't resonate well, it's hard to even hear it over the noise of passerbys, and the action gets extremely high as you go down the neck, with no truss rod to straighten it out. However, it's great for traveling, playing on the beach, and it made it through several bumpy Moroccan taxi rides sliding around in the trunk.


Before I leave in May I will most likely be purchasing a flamenco guitar here, since it would be more economical decision to buy one while im in Andalucia right? I've never looked for flamenco guitars in the states, but im guessing there's hardly anything that's decent, at a good price.

My range is about $600-$1,000, preferably not $1,000, but if I find something truly amazing i do have a few guitars back at home that I don't play much anymore, that i could sell to make up the difference. What are some of the best luthiers in town? It's pretty damn overwhelming, there's a guitar shop literally every other block, sometimes multiple next to each other. I've been to the shop on Calle Navas, and a small one on Cuesta del Gomez. Any recommendations on specific models, luthiers, shops, or specific things to look for?

I'd like to avoid the obvious but since you just happen to be in Granada with "a guitar shop literally every other block" have you considered, perhaps, asking your teacher or some local players instead of a bunch of people you don't know on an internet forum about where to go, places to avoid, what to look for, etc.?

Yes, I went to the one on Calle Navas reccomended by my teacher, didn't have a huge selection in my price range that i liked. Just wondering if anyone had a recommendation for some specific places or luthiers, that is all.

with $600 you can't go to the "best luthiers in town".
in fact with $600 you can't go to any luthier in town.
with $600 you can only buy an "ok" factory guitar to start with.

If you can't pay more than $600, i would go back to US and by a Yamaha CG171SF flamenco guitar for around $300 - $350, then save money for something around $2500 - $3000 later.

Thats a very good advice. I used to live 6 years in Granada and i can tell you that your price range is difficult.
My advice is to buy privately and look for a used Sanchíz (or hermanos sanchiz lopez) or a used Valeriano Bernal.
They are both smal factory guitars that are built like flamenco guitars and they can be pretty good.

its raise the price a little 550 to 700 euros,

you will find some

a good factory flamenco guitars : Prudencio Sáenz , Antonio Bernal

small family semi handmade gutiars : Hermanos sanchis lopez and valeriano bernal

Sorry if these are redundant questions i perused the forums and it helped a little but thanks again. So with $1000 usd would that put me into luthier range or would you just reccomend buying a nice factory model in the same price range?

real luthier guitars are pretty much impossible to get for your money

$1000 US won't even get you close.
A guitar made by an established luthier will probably cost at least four times that amount and most likely more. You may be able to find a decent used instrument for a little less.
Be forwarned, many luthier's shops do sell guitars in your price range and while they may have the luthier's name on the label they are just relabeled factory made student models. There are factory guitars that sell for as much, or more, than some luthier-made instruments.
Don't automatically accept sales pitches, hype and flowery drivel from a seller as fact. Learn what to look for and don't be afraid to ask pertinent questions before you part with your money. If you don't like the answers you get, walk away. There's no shortage of decent guitars out there.
Don't get caught up in the guitar smokescreen. Do your homework or else you can really get burned.

Be very careful with milanuncios! I got in touch with new foro member in the first half of this year. He went to Spain for some months and ordered a used Camps Primera on that plattform. The seller very to be very friendly and answered all questions via mobile phone. The buyer paid on receivement to MRW (shipping agency). Unboxing the brought the rude awakening. The guitar was hardly damaged with several long cracks caused by physical impact! That was a fraud. He went to the police, but they couldn´t detect the seller. The shipping box had only the name and adress of MRW.

My advice: Don´t buy any guitar you haven´t seen! If you want a specific guitar, buy and pay face to face exclusively and take the guitar directly with you!

NATURALLY it's best to deal in person. Also remeber that your friend should have checked the package's contents before paying for it on receiving. Unfortunately in spain there's lots of scammers, partially because of the economic crisis
