"An Andalusian Journey"

I'm trying to locate a copy of the 1992 BBC documentary "An Andalusian Journey". Does anyone know where it might be online, or if someone could send (sell?) me a copy? I believe it's in two parts. I wrote the BBC some time back, but they never answered.

That was indeed a fabulous 2 part documentary, assuming you mean the arena ones i mentioned recently. I believe i have both on video but finding them might be a mission impossible since i have hundreds of videos and lost sight of there location/content. I believe i have found a copy of 1 of them that i made myself for public presentations (the one including Moraito and El Chocolate). I have to check later because i have no video recorder in use right now. If it is indeed the tape i hope it is it might very well turn out to be unplayable (if you don't play them once a year they tend to drop quality up to point were they become unplayable). I'll give it a try later because it also contains some other rare records that needs to be saved for future. But being a 20 year old video sound and image will be very poor if playable at all.

Erik, I don't know what the "arena" ones are, but you seem to be familiar with the documentary I'm talking about...the interviewer goes from town to town talking for key people...I remember one sequence with Fernanda...another in Jerez where a very young Juana la del Pipa talks a bit...

Please let me know if you locate it and it's in watcheable condition. I actually had it on DVD, but someone must have snitched it, a lot of flamenco people come and go through my house.

There's also a new BBC documentary about flamenco...I managed to see it at youtube before it was removed due to copyright violation. It's called "Flamenco Gypsy Soul", and is much less dorky than that title suggests, yet not quite as good as the old "Andalusian Journey".

I had a VHS copy (poor quality) and I have no idea where it is. I do remember it as being much better than the recent "Flamenco Gypsy Soul" where the footage seemed opportunistic by comparison.

The 2 part documentary was part of the so called arena series, stand alone documentaries produced (selected/adapted?) by the weekly returning arena series. One very nice moment was when the interviewer asked El Chocolate "are you a real gipsy?" after which he replied "well, i'm certainly not a dog ain't i !). I'll try to connect a video player soon to see if the tape i found is indeed hosting 1 of the 2 documentaries (actually the one with Moraito showed above). I don't think i will be able to find the original recording (i hope i've tracked the copy i used for flamenco lectures). I have a copy of the other part as well but again it will be a mission impossible to find it. I have over a 1000 tapes staged in boxes hidden somewhere in between dozens of m3 of collected material. If they are playable (and don't break) sound and image will be very poor but hopefully still nice to have.

The full link has been on this forum at one stage because I remember viewing all of it on here. It opens with Morao driving a Hillman Imp. As well as the bodega scenes it has Farruco and Chocolate performing in a senorito's house. It must be buried in the forum archives somewhere.

did you mean manuel morao or moraito? there was another, older documentary linked to on here with manuel morao driving a Hillman - the narrator was very well spoken/old school BBC and it was an older doc from the 60's or early 70's. The Arena Andalusian Journey doc is later, from the 80's or 90's

EDIT the earlier doc was called "Where the Unspeakable is Sung" from 1970 - here;
