Antonio El Monea

Anyone who has been to Jerez and knew El Monea will be saddened to learn that he has passed away.
But he did it in style: rather than a long illness or hospitalisation, he just dropped dead suddenly right in the Plaza del Arenal, probably at the sight of yet another attractive young foreign girl.
I'm glad he went that way, doing what he loved: wandering around the bars of Jerez being a kind of ambassador / host for foreign flamenco aficionados. Brother of Diego Rubichi the singer and of Domingo Rubichi the guitarist, cousin of Manuel Agujetas, he was pretty much Jerez flamenco royalty but didn't consider himself an artist. He could sing like hell though and was a regular palmero. A sad loss. If you knew him you'll understand.

Diego was the brother of Antonio and the father of Domingo, so Antonio was Domingo's uncle. Like everyone in the family, Antonio was a nice guy. I always thought he personified the gypsy combination of severe formality and crazy fun. I've got no links to offer now, but you can see him as a palmero in a few videos and his singing is on at least one recording.
