Jesus Bellido

I think about getting me a Jesus Bellido Negra
but really i never heard them en vivo.
Are they close to the Manuel or Jose Bellido Guitars (In Sound!!!)?

In my eyes the perfect Guitar, scale length etc. is perfect for me and I love the Bellido Sound. Someone told me that the Jesus Bellido Guitars often are better then the ones of his Father Manuel.

are they worth 2900,- Euros ?

I have not played any of Jesus' guitars but I am fairly familiar with the guitars of Manuel. Jesus is highly thought of as a guitar maker. I would imagine that his guitars would be quite close to the ones built by Manuel, although he is a well established builder in his own right and has his own voice... From what I have gathered, his guitars are well rooted in what might be called the "modern Granada" guitars. If this is the case, then they would be well balanced and not too dry, with a strong voice that really sings and trebles that are very lyrical... quite different from a Conde which tends to have a predominant mid-range and very snappy trebles. The sustain would be somewhat in between a Reyes (long sustain) and a Conde (very short).

Johannes seems to think that this particular instrument has very strong basses... which is not necessarily a bad thing, but do consider that a flamenco guitar should not be too predominant in terms of basses. Predominant basses are not something you would really wish for when accompanying dancers. This guitar might be perfect to play solo pieces though. The best for you to get an opinion for yourself would be to try it of course, if you can... otherwise Johannes advice is always a good one. He is very experienced and will direct you towards the perfect instrument for you if you take the time to really explain what you're looking for.

As for the price, this is a Madagascar rosewood back and sides, french polished, hand made artisan guitar of a very high level of craftsmanship, and it is also fairly new (2010)... I personally thing that €2,900 is a very good price for such a guitar! You should also consider resale value, and at this price, you might even be able to get all your money back if you sell it one day (provided the guitar remains in good condition of course).

The price is good, bit this is obviously a very bassy guitar. If its a clean bass sound then that's maybe ok. But if it also has a lot of sustain, you'll probably be disappointed.
You'll just have to try it.

I've never seen Madagascar Rosewood with that color and grain pattern. Look close at the label and you can see "Palosanto Rubio" - I'm no expert, but isn't there a difference between Palosanto and Madagascar RW?

I briefly owned a 2004 Jesus Bellido blanca early on in my flamenco journey. I bought it sight unseen from a US shop because it's impossible to find even decent flamenco guitars where I live. It was quite nice, but ultimately I decided that with the combo of the stiff pulsation and high string height at the bridge (~10.5mm) made it too challenging of a guitar to learn on. The guy I traded it to was a pro and he had an easier time with it (although, he ultimately sold it along with a 90s Conde in favor of his Coral Sigurdson!)

I've bought guitars online many times over the years, and it can be a dangerous game. Sometimes it works out great, and if you're careful you can at least minimize your losses by scoring a good deal on something with good resale. Good luck!

Isn't "palosanto" the spanish name for rosewood?

I read in a French luthier magazine that the French word for rosewood was "palissandre" and not "Bois de Rose" (literally rose-wood in French) like many people seemed to think. The English word for "Bois de Rose" being "Tulipwood".

Anyways, "palosanto" is the Spanish name for "palissandre" hence the Spanish name for rosewood.

In that case if we translate the label literally then this guitar is made of "blonde rosewood"... It would be interesting to get some info about this wood. I've also never seen Madagascar Rosewood guitars being this light/redish in color, they are always very dark.

Here's a nice video of John Amir Haddad playing a very similar guitar to the one you're interested in... same woods, but this one is made by Manuel. I think that Jesus' guitar will be fairly close to that in terms of sound though. Gives you a pretty decent idea of how the guitar will sound like (with more bass it seems!).

I think i will go to Freiburg next week to visit Mundo Flamenco and try some Guitars

The Video (and the Guitar in it) is amazing. No kidding this Guitar belongs to my old Teacher so I heard and played it several times!!! This is the F...ing best Manuel Bellido ever. If the Jesus Bellido even comes close (like 85%) i will buy it without any doubt!

Im not so good with all the Woods that are used today but its really interesting !!!

the Bass and the thing with the accompanying could be a problem because I love to play for Dancers and Singers.

If you have more ideas of what I have to take care about let me know !!!

Hi Paschi,
i had the pleasure to play about 3 different Jesus Bellido Models during my last visit to Granada.
The first one was a Cypress, i compared it directly to a Manuel Bellido Blanca. I liked the Jesus a lot more, it was just like Magic.
The other two Guitars have been quite good, but nothing special. In my opinion give it a try, Johannes has two Jesus Guitar in stock right now.
