Hello from Toronto, Canada!

Hello everyone! I am a dancer from Toronto and I came upon this site while researching portable stage ideas. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hola!

And welcome to the Foro.

I live not far from Toronto (Oakville).

If you ever need an occasional guitarist to practice a few steps of traditional-style flamenco: (Soleares, Alegrias, Farruca, Seguiriyas, etc.) - let me know. I'm available in the daytime. Send me a PM if you're interested.

And enjoy the Foro. . .

We built the portable stage originally described by Anthony, the thread had comments of others who modified it, and we built a 12 piece one that can be assembled in multiple sizes, from 5 by 5 to 11 by 8. We built the thinner version someone had recommended, that is, with 1/4 inch plywood.

1st off, 1/4 inch is way too thin, it results in a bouncy floor that requires support shims/laths everywhere under. In the end you might have just used a 1 and 1/4 inch sheet. You have to make sure all corners have support under them, otherwise they will sink as you step on them. When I say corner, I mean every corner of every piece, so each intersecting corner (where 4 pieces meet) each have support under them. Next time we would use much thicker ply.

2nd point: capacity to hold itself together when assembled.
We used velcro to tie the external pieces together, it works well to prevent the tied pieces from moving away from each other but does not provide lateral strength, meaning when assembled, it is possible to make it move like a snake, for lack of a better description. To compensate for this we use tape (gaffer or duct) at each intersecting corners, that we throw away after each show.

3rd point: stability.
On hard surfaces it wobbles, but I guess that is true of any floor. We use an under-rug anti-slip thingy so that you don't end up with the wood on the cement but something a bit thicker and 'foamier', not dense, would work better to allow absorbing dips in the floor.

Building it ended up taking much time... adding all of the extra lath required for support, and ended up not being cheep to build.

One dancer does not like the floor as it is. I did not get comments from the other dancer, I will add them if I hear from him.
