String height/action

Hello everyone,

I am wondering what the optimal string action or relief is say, at the twelfth fret and how and where it is best to measure. Yes, yes... I realize each person has their own preferences, but tell me, for instance, with what action is an Arcangel Fernandez taken out of the maker's hands. I have been contemplating having a new saddle built for my guitar, so I need to tap your collective knowledge before I go too low! Okay, thank you, thank you.

You should be able to just fit a cigarette between the strings and the soundboard, at the saddle. So I heard

Conrad,
2.5mm at the 12th between brass and underside of string and 8mm at bridge saddle, surface of guitar and underside of strings. Make sure the cigatette's not lit!
Just my opinion.
Cheers
Jim.

You know, I wonder if it is just a coincidence that 6 strings at the saddle are about the width of a pack of Marlboro and the action is the height of a cigarette? Or maybe early Luthiers just smoked a lot and couldn't be bothered with buying a rule

Thanks guys...

A good and bad thing: I don't smoke! Oh well. Thanks for the replies. Right now my action is at 3mm and 9mm (not a big difference from what you told me) at the 12th fret and bridge respectively. So, I will have to think hard about doing the job, unless you tell me I should do it. Okay then, take care.
