Hi from Berkeley! 
Hello guys, my name is Nikolay and I live in the Bay Area. Originally born in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria), I started playing guitar about 15 years ago. I've been through pretty much every popular style of music, started teaching full time about 3 years ago. One day this 7 year-old kid came in with her dad who told me she wanted to learn to play flamenco, so I thought "sure, no problem, I can play Asturias so same thing, right?". How wrong I was... I started using the Juan Martin and Graf Martinez books, watching every tutorial I could find as well as reading this forum. It completely changed my life to the point where it disgusts me to even think about touching my electric guitar, nevermind turning on a distortion pedal. Flamenco is amazing, and I get my ass kicked every day by the simplest of exercises. I hope to learn a lot from you guys, I know there are some incredible musicians here and I am very grateful that this place exists. See you around!

So you are from Bulgaria! I was a US Foreign Service Officer assigned to the American Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria during the period 1974-1976, when Bulgaria was ruled by Todor Zhivkov. Interesting time, to say the least! Are you from Sofia?

Welcome, I am in the same boat. I've played electric/acoustic for 20 years with some occasional classical. Last summer I took up flamenco playing heavily after becoming entranced by the music. I wish I could go back and have spent those 20 years with a flamenco guitar.

Welcome to the foro and greetings from holland. Ever heart of Jimi Hendrix? the electric guitar didn't sound secondary in his hands didn't it ?!

But i must admit i prefer Vicente to play his flamenco guitar and not the electric guitar he handles in this recording (3:15) :-)

Thanks guys! Glad to finally register in the foro, I'm thinking of doing the beginners' Solea challenge but I'm not sure yet.

BarkellWH, I was born in '85, 4 years before the demise of communism, so I didn't get to fully experience that period of time. I guess you'll know more about it than I do!

@Erik: I didn't know Vicente played the electric too, thanks for the video! However, I much more prefer Jeff Kollman from "Cosmosquad" when it comes to that kind of stuff.

@Lenador: I love me some Linear Sphere, best metal-fusion band I've heard in the past 10 years.

If you are in Berkeley you should try to make the acquaintance of Dr. Kenneth Parker AKA Keni El Lebrijano and David Guitierrez...both guitar performers and teachers. And over in Oakland there is Jason McGuire and in SF there are other flamencos.

There are two internationally recognized professional dance ensembles in Oakland and three Gitano singers live in Oakland, two of them perform in public weekly. ...so try to get out and make contact. There is lots of good flamenco in your backyard. I'm out of town for good in a month, but if you have not been out and about let me know.

@estebanana: I literally just came back from watching "Caminos Flamencos" with Jason McGuire perform in Alameda. Very cool venue, I think it's called "Rhythmix" or something like that. I'm still buzzing with the energy I got from the performance, it felt like a proper flamenco show. Jason played a brand new guitar made by Glenn Canin, I think it had the RMC pickups in it, sounded pretty good. I have to say though, I felt like a bit of a creeper over there, recognizing half the people in the crowd from random youtube videos.

P.S. Ok, now I realize that your name is Steven. :) Were you there? I think one of the dancers asked for you at the beginning of the first set. Jason was seriously repping your guitars as well.
