Tomatito at Sadlers Wells

Did anyone else go and see Tomatito last night ? I was going to do a shout out but knew I had to leave promptly to get a train.

It was a pretty amazing 1:40 set with Tomatito playing alongside a really young guitarist, percussionist, two singers and a dance.

As you can imagine there were a lot of Tangos > Bulerias but the highlight from me was the group playing a Solea por Buleria with the dancer, it was so good to watch Tomatito almost loose control as he tried to keep up. He looked like he was having a good time with friends rather than a purely virtuosic exercise which was what I was actually expecting.

The dancing was ridiculous at some point she looked like she was standing still but still tapping incredibly fast. I still almost suspect there was a foot tap backing track but they wouldn't do that would they ?

Anyway I would love to hear any other thoughts on the show, the name of that long slow melodic arpeggio piece and the name of the dancer if anyone knows.

Yes!

we had a train to catch after too

I really enjoyed the show. I have been listening to this guys music for over 20 years and every time he plays I have missed it - until last night!

so it was nice for me to hear/see him mix in some old falsetas from the time of Camaron records (and on Encuentro) with the newer stuff, and cool too that they are not exact the same as the old versions.

the dancer was for real, no backing tapes (we were in second row). she was really good, and not just the footwork, but I thought she was very expressive too.

I think the younger second guitarist is his son, no?

Oh yeah you are right about his son.
Now I remember this.

I must have been sat behind you. The dancing was incredible and they miked the floor up nicely too.

Do you remember the dancers or singers names ?

no, but my program does

percusion was Piraña, aka Israel Suárez

singers Kiki Cortiñas and Simón Román

dancer Paloma Fantova

lists second guitarist as "El Cristi"

Simon Roman, for me, was the star of the show - he was great on the Camaron letras, "Eso no se hace, eso no esta bien," etc. Both singers were really good, but Simon has a lot of presence. The format was basically the same as the last time round at Saddlers Wells but with a different dancer. Paloma Fantova. She had amazing Duracell zapateado but didn't really move me at all, I'm sorry to say. It was a good night, though. Great to see a full house for the maestro. My girlfriend had never seen anything like it before and she loved it.

I was there too; enjoyed the whole show, especially the dance, she was great.
Stayed for a few drinks at Shkespeare's Head after the show with some fellow guitarists and dancers.

Ok so one of you must know what that long arpeggio piece
Tomatito played with was. I am not sure it was even a Flamenco palos.
I liked it though.

John,

A few people asked the same question from our teacher and he said that it wasn't any specific palo; it was just a nice piece!

Right now a question for you: Was that a Seguriya that led to the SPB?

sounded like something from the Spain album. I haven't listened to that cd for so long I couldn't be sure, but the piece sounded familiar

EDIT: just checked the cd - Spain (with Michel Camilo) track 5 "Two Much/Love Theme" I think that was it

at first from the palmas my girlfriend thought it was SPB, but then when the singer came in I thought he was warming up to sing Siguiriyas.... but then it became SPB.... so I don't really know!

they are not cheap.... but if you go to more than one show in the festival you only have to buy one program as all the shows are in there.

we are going to the Gala Flamenca next week

I would have loved to make it to more of the shows in the festival but it costs more to travel there and back than the price of the theatre ticket, so only two shows allowed

btw, anyone else spot Pedro Sierra and La Tobala in the audience? She is singing in the show tonight, tomorrow and saturday (Pedro NOT listed in the program on guitar though)

Yes I did , and very good it was to. As was Vicente Amigo just over a year ago in the very same venue but it raises one question.
Tomatito played for just over one and a half hours while Vicente played for 2 hours solid.Thats 3 and a half hours of Flamenco and not one tremelo falseta played.

Is tremelo going out of fashion with the top soloists ?

Thats funny I thought exactly the same but I thought it was just me being rubbish. Maybe it was exactly that.

Yeah that is quite crazy, if I could play a nice tremolo I am sure I would put one somewhere. Maybe it takes time to warm into it and by that time its all up tempo.
I am sure someone will have a decent answer here.
