the masses of the people want instant satisfaction...instant food, instant sex, instant music... you need time and a certain level of (at least emotional) intelligence to appreciate more complex levels of any art...and even if one does, they're not easily exposed to that stuff because everything is filled with instant garbage, even if they do, it may not be hip enough... and of course in the world that's all about chasing profit, those responsible for making art available for the masses, are simply not interested in anything slightly complicated... we may as well rename our planet to Ferenginar :D

Its funny how every off topic has to turn into some social/economic downturn of the world at large. Whether it's astronomy conspiracy or music and art...

Gangnam Style crap, P. Diddy, Kanye West, etc. shows that most of the favorite music is garbage.
I couldn't agree more with you, Shroomy. In fact, I stand by my earlier statement that It is a sign of how much "dumbing down" has occurred in labels today that rap, gangnam style, etc. are even considered "music." They are really nothing more than vaguely syncopated noise.
Cheers,
Bill

Now that i indulge fingerstyle acoustic guitar [steel strings, that is] I incline that Celtic harmony [that Vicente Amigo seems to incorporate in his recent work]. Here is a fellow Italian, playing his gaelic composition, with a Japanese title [and yet, this ain't no 'world music' !!]. Please oblige me and lsiten to this gem...

If you had another Woodstock, I don't think you'd get the caliber of musicians you got back then. It would be mostly all of these pop/rap and some rock artists.
They've got it, it's called Coachella and it's twice the drugs, half the talent.

Which was not the case in the late 70's. Instead, the favorite music was actually decently good music.
Dude, you're living in a dream. Know what was hot in the 70's? Disco. Then it was MC Hammer. Music is not degrading, it's evolving - especially the way it's being consumed. Of course the masses listen to simpler music than more discerning aficionados.

I like the reference, but both Quark and the Grand Negus proved that although they are obsessed with profit, they never committed any atrocities on the scale of what the hu-mons did.

That comment is 100% ignorance. How much rap did you listen to? The musical aspect of rap is centered on highly syncopated rhythms (like flamenco) with an emphasis on lyrics.
I'm not a huge hip hop fan, but dismissing an entire genre of music (yes, music) is ridiculous. Every genre has it's merits and cultural function (even Reggaeton).
It's like saying flamenco is some guy screaming in Spanish.

Point well taken, Chester. My 13 yrs old daughter loves Marilyn Manson and Robert Zombie [talk about some guys screaming in… English]. My visceral aversion to their music only evokes the same dislike my own father suffered whenever hearing my stereo playing Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin; the distance between his Opera arias or Sinatra’s songs and my music is the same as the divide I now feel with Manson and Zombie. It would be too haste a conclusion to dismiss their work as ‘noise’ [as my fathered labeled mine].
When we cannot appreciate the music of our time, when we find ourselves proclaiming ‘they do not make them like that anymore’, when we are clingingly attached to music that has aged and is now 'old'… we too are... old.
For the avoidance of any doubt, I am not suggesting we should recant the classics or classical music, but only that we should keep on open mind to new generation of musicians and ideas, distant as they may appear from our callously inveterate ‘good taste’ in music.

Speaking of 100 percent ignorance! To compare rap's syncopated rhythms with flamenco, and then (and this takes the cake!) to suggest that my comment about rap is "like saying flamenco is some guy screaming in Spanish" reveals true ignorance. I do not consider rap "music," but your comments suggest that you don't know the difference between a real musical genre and something others may consider music but is nowhere near the level of flamenco, or any other genre of music.
As a final thought, you do realize that calling someone's comment "100 percent ignorance" because you do not agree with it reveals much more about yourself than it does about the person making the comment.

I dig 50cent's albuns and a song or two from someother rappers.
I enjoy things like Dream Theater, Napalm Death, Ebu Gogo, Nick Cave, Cannibal Corpse, HIM, Animals as Leaders, Y. Malmsteen, Tori Amos, Steel Panther, Amon Tobin and lots of other unrelated stuff.... but in the end, when I just want to clear my mind and feel inspired, nothing beats the "perfection" of Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Erik Satie and so on...
Flamenco and Jazz also have that effect on me, althought in a lesser extent.

No offense but.. Its hard for me to understand how someone who likes Chopin, Satie, Debussy or any good Classical/Flamenco player also likes rap or heavy metal
RE: Your musical interest apart from... (in reply to Guest)
Whaaat? Have a look at the sheet music for "Fermented Offal Discharge" by Necrophagist and tell me that's not virtuosity. You just hear loud noises, distortion and growling and your brain shuts down. There is A LOT going on, not to mention for the drummers. I like any music with virtuosity, that's how I can like Sabicas and Necrophagist.
RE: Your musical interest apart from... (in reply to Guest)
Oh yeah, gotta add, metal is a really diverse genre and not all metal is created equal. There is A LOT of crap metal, I know, I've been listening to it for 29 years and I'm 29 years old. I've sat through some painful opening bands in my day. You tend to be safe with Thrash, death, and technical though.

You and Bill - Relax. Trying to insult me doesn't make your points any stronger.
About syncopated rhythms - when the upbeat (as in not the downbeat) is accented you have syncopation. It exists in many genres of music. Of course Dr. Dre isn't making a buleria track, but there's some sophistication there.
It's not that I don't agree with your dislike of rap. Feel free to listen to whatever floats your boat. But saying that it's not music is akin to (here's something age-appropriate for you) Louie Armstrong calling Bebop 'noise'.

I think it's about time you bust out your dictionary and look up the definition of 'music'. You might be in for a surprise.
Anyway, I apologize if my comment ruffled your feathers. I didn't mean to suggest that you are ignorant (although I can tell from your comments that you're not exactly very educated when it comes to music [trollface.jpg]), only that your comment comes from ignorance.
GJ - I'd say Rob Zombie isn't too bad for a 13-year-old. I remember when my younger cousin would listen to Alanis Morissette.

I (still) like her music. Lyrics arent to shabby either. Really lots of good songs. And she made a prank video on that stupid Black Eyed Peas song "My Hump". That makes her even more heroic.
RE: Your musical interest apart from... (in reply to Guest)
Good question.
Tired of replacing CDs or Venyls for that matter, I was seeking for some file player that could be hooked up to a standalone convertor and into my stereo. In the "electronics quarter" of the local capitol noone had heard of such, and all they could offer was lousy mp3 players for ridiculous amounts. ( I wanted something that could play all formats / WAV and flac in the first place.)
So, about a year ago I had someone bring me a device from abroad, digged up in the internet and called "Logitech Squeezebox Touch".
Exactly what your doc describes. Only that, you guessed it already, that LT website is being blocked from here to prevent rebellious citizens from listening to internet radio stations, hence me finding himself unable to initialize the little device.
Meanwhile I found a way to get that thing to work without online animation, but am stuck for almost a week now trying to get that thing to actually function. ( Trying to set up wireless connection to server feed, etc.)
Thursday night, frustrated of being unable with all this I connected a prepared harddisk to the new laptop and put on headphones. Your average soundcard convertors are pretty fine stuff these days, and I ended up listening till morning sunrise.
And I was thinking of you while auditoning albums like J.J.Cale´s "guitar man". Man, was I involuntarily floundering!
Just look at the lame monotonous crap that is called "dance music" this days, and then listen to endlessly inspired sounds so groovy that you just can´t but even rock an office chair. -
BTW, guys: Though I havn´t it running yet, this little computer with all kinds of connections and application features really is the hit for what it can do, and that at an incredible price. Logitech appears to have stopped production, for planing to switch to a much more humble / scaled down consumer friendly concept. And it is being said already that these devices are probably joining those that will sell used in the future for what they used to cost once new.
If spotting some still, you might want to grab yourself one or two for your house.

Sorry, but you dont know rap. Period.
You, like Chester, confuse "knowing" rap with agreeing with your definitions and positions. This mindset leads to the conclusion (logical, if one accepts your premise) that to disagree with your definitions and positions regarding rap (or anything else for that matter) is to be ignorant or "not know" the subject under discussion, in this case rap. Such a solipsistic attitude naturally works to exclude any opinions that are not in accord with yours.
Cheers,
Bill

No. You simply dont know it and thus shouldnt have an opinion on it. I dont like rap for other reasons, but saying it has no musical complexity (ie rhythmic complexity, which is imo much higher than in flamenco anyways) is a wrong and uneducated statement by someone who has clearly no idea what he is talking about.
