What Would U Do? 
Hi All,

It's been a while since I posted on this site.

Recently, I had to caregive to my Mom and I had to stop playing guitar for 2 MONTHS!!

I recently returned and got back into it!!! I REALLY LOVE IT!!!

Okay, it's still guitar dilema for me.

I am currently playing a a classical takamine cutaway electric accoustic/electric guitar. This guitar is TRASHED...

Picks up don't work and I tried to lower the bridge like a flamenco guitar only to find out from a luthier that the neck angle is off. Can't lower it like a flamenco guitar.

Recently, I found a USED yahama flamenco CG171sf that someone is selling.

I have also SAVED more than enough to get a hand built flamenco guitar!

The problem is I am still at beginner/Intermediate stages and I am scared to invest in a decent guitar because of my caregiving commitments.

I LOVE playing flamenco and studying!! I even purchase Doctor Compas and it has helped my playing LOTS!!!

So, I guess, I just need advice! Should I take the plunge and get a handbuilt guitar or get this OLD Yamaha flamenco guitar.

I know flamenco is what I LOVE to play, but, I am thinking that this cheap, old yahama might be the best way until I get beyond intermediate level...

What do you all think?

Well, I would say guitars don't expire and hand built instruments can retain their value fairly well(depending). If it ends up in a corner and you end up having to sell it that wouldn't be the end of the world.......except that you would be turning your back on us and the whole flamenco community! jk Do what makes you happy

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply...

Since I am learning on a guitar angle that is off...It is hard to do the type of golpe (not sure what the name is) where one hits the top part of the guitar to the low E string and down...

I am at intermediate on some palos, like Tangos,and solea, can play a basic buleria compas....But, I am at the beginner stuff when it comes to alzpua and buleria, etc.

Well, I am going to purchase the Yahama! It is the older one so hopefully I can learn for more until I get beyond beginner/Intermediate! I have nothing to loose, okay, I am purchasing it at GC and they are sending it to my local GC in AZ. If I don't like it, I have the 30 Day return policy...I only loose out on shipping which is CHEAP!!!

Thanks guys, and I would NEVER forsake the flamenco community

get both

the second hand yamaha shouldn't make a dent in your budget for the other guitar, and then you will have a knockabout guitar for leaving laying about the house or going camping

Sounds good too me

Well, one good thing is the Yahama will get my hands primed. I am playing on a takamine and the neck nut is a little narrow...

The Yamaha will get my hands in shape for a 52mm nut and wider spacing...When I do decided to get my hand built guitar, then I won't have to go narrower...

I will let you all know when it arrives.

I understand it won't be like a hand built i.e. pulsation, and everything else one would get in a hand built guitar, but, at least the neck angle will be correct and least good enough to advance..

At least this is what I am hoping for....

Kalo,
It sounds as though you made the right choice. I can tell you from personal experience that the better you get the more discerning your ear and hands will become. I played my Rodriguez C3F for about 4 years before I bought a better instrument. I understand the lure of a brand new handbuilt instrument but truth be told, the Yamaha will work just fine for now. Yes, a luthier built guitar will probably play easier and sound better, but its really the skill of the muscian that makes the biggest difference, not necessarily the instrument. I'll bet PDL could make that Yamaha really sing!! When the time comes to move up to a luthier grade instrument, the Yamaha will be easy to sell as someone is always looking for a low cost starter instrument. Good luck!

I actually still play it from time to time. I love the way the bass strings sound. Very flamenco.


Hi Shroomy 726, this makes me happy to know and with shipping and taxes I paid $247.00 for this older model....Can't go wrong with that at all, plus, if worst come to worst, I have a 30 day return policy

Hi Sig, thanks! I think you are right as well...I am still beginner on a lot of stages, but, intermediate in other things....So many palos I haven't cover...

That is awesome that you played your Rodriguez C3F guitar for 4 years before you bought a better istruments. And, of course PDL could make a cheap yamaha sing

I am sure there are lot of advance players on the foro that can make Yamaha sing as well

I will keep everyone posted and hopefully I can post some of my playing soon!

Thanks for the response Ricardo! I actually do the money! If this Yamaha doesn't work out, I have a 30 Day return policy, I will most likely return for handmade..

If the Yamaha is decent and my hand feels comfortable, I will keep it for a while then I will get handmade...

You could also get a 2A instrument from Andy Culpepper or Anders, they are less than their 1A instruments, but still very nice and french polished. Another option is a Francisco Navrro Concert Flamenco. It is what I own and it sounds and looks great, and cheaper than above mentioned 2As, but still hand made. The street price is $1,800, but you may be able to negotiate a slightly better price, although I'm not sure.

I actually had a Francisco Navarro Student Flamenco guitar. My first one was nice, I had to sell it...

I am wondering what the difference between the Fransico Concert Flamenco and the student is???

I think the Navarro's son makes the Student and the Concernt is Navarro himself other than that, I think the specs, wood, tuners are the still the same...I also believe the Concert has better polish on it...

Just get the guitar you really want and forget the crappy Yamaha. The money you will save by not wasting it on that plastic coated box with strings would be better spent on lessons from Ricardo. Kalo will be happy, Andy and Ricardo will be happy.
My only other advice is, never ever take your husband shoe shopping with you jkd.

Actually, I am not the kind of gal who is crazy shoe shopper

Thanks for the advice though! I will try the Yamaha and if it's not what I like, no problem in returning it and maybe talking to Andy

And of COURSE taking lessons with Ricardo

If that Yamaha doesn't work out, I highly recommend Andy. I have one of his Cedar top blanca's and its really outstanding. He's a great player so he understands how to set it up properly for flamenco. I don't think you can go wrong with any of our resident luthiers instruments.

Well, the Yamaha should arrive this week. Believe me I am going to give it a whirl and well, if it doesn't work out, then for sure I am going to contact Andy!
